8th Grade STREAM Projects
Students team up and choose a book from their childhood and create a video that retells the story in their own creative ways. The stories are then collected in Google Drive and given to the lower grades to use in their classrooms.
Students utilize their skills in Math and 3D printing to create math manipulatives. Students are directed to contact lower grade teachers (K-3) to assess a math concept they wish to work on. The teams draw up schematics and 3D print after finalizing plans with the grade level teacher. The students will visit the lower grades and show them how to use the math manipulatives. An instructional video is created to leave with the teachers so that the math manipulatives can be used in the future.
Students choose a saint they wish to research. The information from their research is used to create a website about that saint. Students use Google Sites to create their saint website with text information, pictures and videos. Students learn how to create an effective website that focuses on key elements of good website design (color, font text, layout..etc). The websites are collected and sent to the lower grades so students may use the information for their own saint projects.
The Sphero Challenge uses the Sphero robots. Students can choose between the bowing or maze challenge. The bowling challenge uses 3D printed pins with proportional bowling lanes. Students then program their Sphero Robots to bowl an entire game. The team with the best score wins. The maze challenge allows students to create a large maze and program their Spheros to traverse it. Each team is given a section of the maze to design and any material in the STEM room can be used. The team who is able to traverse the maze the fastest wins.
Project Discovery allows our students to showcase what they have learned in their time in STEM. The students create their own STEM project but must have a formal proposal that includes what their project is, a detailed timeline and a strict budget. Students are not allowed to ask for money from their parents but instead are encouraged to raise their own funds in entrepreneurial ways.
