Course Description

Choir members will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of music concepts (rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre), terms and symbols.

Choir members will experience and practice vocal and general musicianship skills:

Vocal technique:  Demonstrating appropriate posture, breath support, tone production, consonant diction and vowel formation.

Ear-training:  Recognizing information about notes like pitch, intonation (is it "in-tune"?), intervals, scales and chords just by hearing them.

Audiation:  The process of mentally hearing and comprehending, even when no physical sound is present.  When a musician develops their "inner ear" it is like thinking music without the actual sound.

Sight-reading:  The ability to sing a piece of music of beginning difficulty at first sight.

Ensemble:

  • Blending and balancing all of the voices in the choir to create "one voice."
  • Demonstrating leadership through active participation and cooperative effort.
  • Understanding the role of the conductor and the corresponding cues.
  • Being open to singing music of different styles and genres.

Musical Interpretation:

  • How dynamics, tempo, articulation and phrasing are applied to a given piece of music.
  • Understanding the meaning of the text of the song based upon cultural and historical perspectives.

Performance:

  • Singing with increased confidence, personally and in public.
  • Analyzing one's own progress and performance.
  • Analyzing the performance and progress of the group.
