Catholic High School Placement Testing

(Scroll down for Public High School information)

All Catholic High Schools test on the same days:

January 8, 2011  with a make-up test on January 22, 2011

Check with the high school for the time of the test.  Take the test at the first choice school.  The student will be given the option to send the results to two additional schools.

Testing Tips

The test you will take is the HSPT, the High School Placement Test.  Visit the high school websites to see if you need to register for the tests.

The reason for the test is to verify that you have a solid eighth grade education, and if not, they may ask that you take summer school.  A high score on the placement test does not guarantee your admission, neither does a low score guarantee you won’t be accepted for admission to a Catholic high school.

The best preparation for the test includes the following:

  •   Be well rested and fed on the day of the test.
  • Arrive 10 minutes before the exam begins (each school is different, check their websites)
  • Bring at least 2 #2 pencils.
  • Bring a sweater, the rooms are cold at first, and being nervous might make you a little cold.
  • Have the test fee ready

There are a number of study guides available at the library or bookstores if you choose to use them.  The tests are timed.  If you are going to take the practice tests, do at least one of them timed.  You need to know when to skip a question so that you don’t run out of time.  Questions not answered at the end of a section will hurt you more than one or two that you spent extra time on at the beginning.

Here are the time allocations for each section:

Section

Total time

Number of questions

Verbal Skills

16 minutes

60

Quantitative

30 minutes

52

Reading Comprehension

25 minutes

62

Mathematics

45 minutes

In order to have the test show your knowledge, you will want to be familiar with the types of questions that will be on the test.  This is where practice tests and test preparation guides are useful. Read carefully how the questions are structured.

Devise a strategy so that you bubble your answers correctly, especially when you skip a question.  Check often that you are on the right line.

Know how to guess. If you can quickly eliminate one or more of the answers, you increase the odds of making an accurate guess. Wrong answers do not help your score, but you are not penalized extra for guessing.

Good Luck and God Bless You.

The High Schools open their application window from November through the end of January.  Please check with the High Schools for details on their process.  Every school is different, and the process may change slightly each year.

The student distributes the recommendations to whoever is indicated.   We will give you our “Release of Test Scores” for the school where you are taking the test.

Please check to see if you need to sign the recommendation form before submitting it. Our policy is not to complete a recommendation for a student until the parent has waived the right to see it.

When a recommendation is received at the front office, the student has a routing slip assigned.

Each teacher returns the completed recommendation to the office. The transcript is the last piece and is done in January.  A copy of the permanent record card made and all is sent together in a packet to each school the student is applying to.

When everything is delivered to the respective school, the school gives the student the routing slip to indicate the materials have been sent.

Please note that we do everything we can to make sure that every student is accepted at the school of their choice.  There is a limit on the number of seats at each school, and sometimes a student is placed on a waitlist.  We recognize that this is a hard place for the student and the parents, but St. John Bosco has no control over the decisions of the high schools. We will help as much as we can.

Open House - 8th Grade Days - Shadowing

Brophy College Preparatory

Open House
On Sunday, November 7, 2010, from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, Brophy will hold an Open House for anyone interested in learning more about the school and the admissions process. Brophy students offer guided tours of the campus and facilities. There are opportunities to meet and ask questions of current Brophy students, teachers, coaches and administrators. The last tour will be scheduled for 3:00 PM., and reservations are not required.

Entrance Examination

  • The entrance examination may be taken on either Saturday, January 8, 2011, or Saturday, January 22, 2011, from 8:00 AM. until noon.
  • The applicant should arrive at Brophy by 7:30 AM. for registration in Brophy Hall.
  • The Application for Admission and fee are due three days prior to the chosen test date.
  • We will provide all materials for the test, as well as midmorning snacks and drinks.  No calculators, drinks, or food may be brought to the test site.
  • Although the applicant may take the entrance exam on either scheduled date, we recommend that he plan to come on the first Saturday (January 8), to ensure a make-up opportunity in the event of an emergency or illness.
  • There is no need to notify us which Saturday the applicant will take the exam; receipt of the $75 fee automatically qualifies the applicant to take the exam on either date.
  • There will be no further notification as to exam dates and times, nor is it necessary to call and confirm.
  • Although we accept results from entrance exams taken at other Catholic high schools, those results do not always arrive at Brophy in time for consideration by the Admissions Committee.
  • Applicants who do not take the Entrance Exam at Brophy are expected to complete the writing sample of Brophy’s test on the same day they are interviewed.  Please expect to stay another 25 minutes after your interview to complete this portion of the test.

Admissions Interviews
The Admissions interviews will take place in January.
To take full advantage of your interview, an important part of the application process, please plan to arrive at least 5 - 10 minutes prior to your appointed time to check in at the Student Activity Center located in Keating Hall at the center of campus and be escorted to an interview room. Parents are invited to wait in the Student Activities Center.
Applicants should dress comfortably for their interviews. No special dress code requirement.
When you arrive on campus, park in the South lot. Enter the campus mall by walking through the arches of the McCain Colonnade located in the Eller Fine Arts Center. The Student Activity Center is located on the first floor of Keating Hall. As you walk through the colonnade, Keating Hall will be on your right side. The entrance to the Student Activity Center is on the northwest corner next to the Varsity Shop. Click here for a map of Brophy's campus (PDF).

Shadow Program

The Shadow Program is designed to provide interested 8th grade students an opportunity to visit the Brophy campus for a routine day, attend classes and meet teachers.  Shadowing is not mandatory as part of the application process; but it is a great opportunity to spend some time on our campus in the company of a Brophy student.  If you are interested in scheduling a shadow day, please review the following information.

Scheduling
Beginning Tuesday, September 7, shadow days will be scheduled online using the request form. No phone calls please. Visits will take place on selected Tuesdays, Wednesdays Thursdays and some Fridays.  See the Shadow Day request form for available dates. We permit a limited number of shadows each day and some days are closed due to school conflicts.  Requests will be filled in the order in which they are received and you should receive a response to your request within 2 – 3 days.  If you do not know a Brophy boy in the freshman class to request as a host, we will assign one from our Diplomatic Corps.

On Shadow Day

  • Student guests should report to the Admissions Office in Eller Fine Arts Center between 7:45 and 8:00 AM. (school begins at 8:05 AM)
  • Student guests must comply with the Brophy dress code – a shirt with stand-up collar, slacks or shorts worn with a belt. No denim jeans.  Hats are never worn inside the buildings.
  • Food service is provided at The Harper Great Hall where students may purchase pizza, sandwiches, snacks and drinks ($3.00-$5.00 for lunch and break) or guests may bring their own lunch.
  • Student guests are advised to bring a book to read should a teacher give a test during class.
  • Student guests are to be picked up at 2:05 PM in the Admissions Office.
  • Transfer students may shadow anytime during the year. The same rules and procedures apply to them.

Directions to the Admissions Office
When you arrive on campus, park in the South lot.  Enter the campus mall by walking through the arches of the McCain Colonnade located in the Eller Fine Arts Center.  The Admissions Office is on the ground level inside the McCain Colonnade.

There are several ways to explore opportunities at Saint Mary's Catholic High School:
For eighth grade students, we sponsor two Eighth Grade Days in October. Catholic schools are invited to these events and arrangements are made at the school level. For other eighth graders, please call 602-251-2501 to make a reservation so that we can plan accordingly. We ask that all students be accompanied by an adult. The day is designed for students and focuses on student interests. Lunch will be served and the day ends with a pep assembly.
For parents of prospective students at every level, we sponsor a formal Open House each November. The Open House includes an opening presentation and a tour of the campus, with new presentations throughout the afternoon. Faculty, coaches, and parents of current students will be available. Although the day is designed for parents, students are welcome to attend.
The application process for freshmen begins with the High School Placement Test (Entrance Exam).
Scheduled test dates are offered in January each year (no pre-registration is required).
All test takers should arrive at our Main Office by 7:45 on the morning of the test day. The test will take approximately four hours. A testing fee of $35 will be charged. The testing fee is due on the day the test is taken.
This test is given by all diocesan high schools. Saint Mary's will accept test scores for a student if the test was taken at another high school.
Parents interested in exploring Saint Mary’s Catholic High School as the school for their son or daughter, are encouraged to contact Rob Rogers, Assistant Principal, at (602) 251-2508 for more information or to begin the admissions process. Advanced Placement Testing (approximately 3 hours)

The Honors/Gifted Testing Season is about to begin and I wanted to bring your attention to a couple of changes in the process this year.

First and foremost we will not be requesting teacher recommendations; any student that scores in the 77% and above will qualify for honors courses.  Below is the excerpt from our Honors/Gifted Testing Booklet.

A score in the 77th percentile or above in Verbal (English/Social Studies), Quantitative (Mathematics), and or Abstract Reasoning (Science) meets the criteria for honors placement. A student who qualifies is NOT required to take honors classes.

A score below the 77th percentile indicates that a student does not qualify for honors placement at this time. However, once a student has demonstrated outstanding performance at the high school, he or she may request to be recommended for future honors placement. All requests will be evaluated at individual sites by the site Registrar.

Our first testing session will be on Saturday, September 11, 2010 and our last sessions is on Saturday, November 6, 2010.  All testing sessions will take place on the campus of McClintock High School; a map has been provided in the handbook for parents.  As always, do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any assistance throughout the semester.  .  Thank you for your support of Tempe Union High School District.
