What is A LASER Card?

St. John Bosco Interparish School uses the acronym LASER to refer to the Student Learning Expectations, a set of statements of what a student should know, understand, value, and be able to do by graduation. These learning outcomes were collaboratively developed in 2004 as part of our original accreditation and have been revised and updated over the past few years.  They represent the focus of the entire school community. On the broadest level, our learning outcomes are:

Life Long Learner
Active Catholic
Self Aware Individual
Effective Communicator
Responsible Citizen

These outcomes are further broken down to reflect how they look in a classroom setting for each grade level.  All rules, skills and procedures stem from the LASER Skills. The detail level of each expectation can be seen here. Staff members give LASER cards to students who have demonstrated a particular skill.  On Fridays we draw names of students that have earned LASER cards and present them with a certificate for a treat.

Reminders for the Week

Gesell information night for incoming kindergarteners is Monday, Feb. 8th at 6:30 in the Library. No children please.
Early dismissal (noon) Tuesday and Wednesday for conferences. Contact your child's teacher or special teachers directly to schedule a time.  Map is availble for registered students.
Class group pictures is Thursday, Feb. 11th.   Students should wear their Mass uniform.

Catholic School's Week

Thank you to the SJB Community, especially the student body for showing your school spirit each day by participating in the daily activities.  Cans across campus was a huge success and St. Vincent de Paul was so thankful for the donations.  8th grade students stepped up to help and showed wonderful leadership skills.  Thank you to the administration, staff, teachers and our student council leaders for allowing us to celebrate the high standards of excellence and the quality of the education available to all students at St. John Bosco.

Diocesan Spelling Bee

Lauren D. represented Saint John Bosco very well at the Diocesan Spelling Bee held on Tuesday, February 2.  She was one of the last three contestants, but had a heartbreaking stumble on the word vandalism. She "wowed" the audience with her confident style, especially when spelling the word Malachite. This is Lauren's last year at Saint John Bosco.  She has been in every Saint John Bosco School Spelling Bee since she was in the fourth grade.  Best wishes for a bright future, Lauren!

Denim Dollar Day has been changed to Wednesday, February 10th.

It was originally scheduled for February 17th which is Ash Wednesday, a day we will be attending Mass.

Self-Discipline LEADERSHIP SKILLS – Exhibit Leadership #9

The qualities of a leader are universal. They are found in the poor and the rich, the proud and the humble, the common person and the brilliant thinker. Leaders are admired and set apart because their actions transcend our ordinary daily life. They do ordinary things with extraordinary care. Our children frequently call their leaders "Heroes".

There are hidden qualities about heroes and heroines that are not obvious to children. Children can be taught that true leaders develop these qualities:
   1. They SEE the NEEDS of others and consider them important.
   2. They stand on the side of TRUTH even if they stand alone.
   3. They ACT on behalf of another, even if they are INCONVENIENCED.
These leadership qualities can emerge in children at any age. We empower children to continue to develop these qualities when we point out to them what we see them do. We also help them to understand the skill of leadership when we tell them about others who have displayed these qualities. Finally, we can challenge them to become leaders, when we point out opportunities they might have missed to demonstrate heroic actions.

Parking on 48th Street Has Changed:

In response to safety concerns, the City of Phoenix has changed the "No Stopping" signs on 48th Street.  The new signage is for "No Stopping" along the entire frontage of the school from St. Benedict to the apartments.  "No Stopping" is enforced during drop-off hours from 6:30-8:30am and pickup hours from 2:00-4:00pm.  The north parking lot is now complete, so there are plenty of options to park either at SJB, at St. Benedict, or to use the carpool queue.  Thank you for your continued patience.  Be safe!

Catholic Schools Week

The theme this year is Dividends for Life. In a time when there is competition for time and resources, Catholic Schools Week celebrates an education that goes beyond preparation for a secular life ─ it is education that prepares students for a Christian life. This week celebrates the high standards of excellence and the quality of the education available to all students at St. John Bosco.

Saturday, January 30 from 11-2 is the Open House for prospective parents.  If you have friends or neighbors that might be interested in finding out more about Catholic Education, please call and let them know about this opportunity.

Please have your children wear their St. John Bosco Mass uniform to Mass this weekend.

Self-Discipline LEADERSHIP SKILLS – Accomplish a Task #8

We continue this week with this very important Leadership Skill. Try to help your children learn to do things for themselves, and resist the temptation to think, "I can get things done faster and better if I do it myself." This may be true but because when children start doing things for themselves, they do it their way. This means initially, their projects may be messy. At home you can look for opportunities to turn over some of the routine household functions to members of your family. Try to adopt the mindset of not doing something for a child if they can do it themselves.  Things may be a little messy at first, but the effort will be worthwhile!

COME ONE, COME ALL!!!

PTO Board Meetings are open to all St. John Bosco Parents and Teachers – Everyone is encourage to attend and participate.

Hats for Haiti
Hello and thank you for listening to our plea.  Our names are Lauren Rodrick and Bridget Manning.  We would like to raise products for those in need in Haiti.  You may remember us from "Hats for the Homeless"  campaign but now we are serving our fellow neighbors in Haiti.  We are raising our hats for toiletries!  They are in need of soap, shampoo, q-tips, washcloths,
toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, combs, brushes, nail clippers, etc.  Search your heart for the "Hearts for Haiti" campaign.  We are in contact with a church of Haiti in Phoenix who will accept and ship all of our donations directly to those most in need.  If only one bottle or bar, it will mean ever so much to those with out.  Donation bins will be located outside the front office at St. John Bosco.  Please help us to help others!  Thank you in advance!

North Parking Lot Progress:

Thank you for your continued patience with parking and especially in the north parking lot which will continue to have limited parking for the duration of the construction project.  Substantial progress has already been made, with completion estimated for the first week of February.  When complete, the project will provide an additional 27 parking spaces along with improved access and fencing.  Continue to allow yourself an extra 5 minutes when picking up or dropping off children.  Those few minutes will best ensure the safety of our community!

Catholic Schools Week ~ January 31st - February 5th

The theme for this year is "Dividends for Life".  Please click on the link for a complete schedule of events.

Special Person Day ~ February 5, 2010

Special Persons' Day is an annual event where students are encouraged to invite a special person to visit them at school.  Due to space limitations, please reserve this day for your child's "Special Person" and as a parent join us on another day.  Click on the link to register your child's special person.

Health Office

Be aware we have had reports in Chandler and Ahwatukee of head lice.  While they carry no disease, they are difficult to get rid of and spread easily.  Please take a few minutes to check your student's hair this weekend and talk to them about not sharing hats or brushes.  It would also help if girls with long hair would put their hair in a pony tail.  Also be aware of your environment when you are out and about in the community and participating in sports.

Christian Service Award Winners

Congratulations to Erika Z. and Garrett R. for receiving the Christian Service Award from the Diocese of Phoenix.  Each year eighteen 8th graders from across the Diocese document their commitment of service to their parish, school and community and apply for this $8000 tuition scholarship toward any of the Catholic High Schools. They collect letters of recommendation from their pastor and a teacher, write an essay and participate in a face-to-face interview with a member of the Service 2 Learn Committee.  Previous awardees from St. John Bosco include Adriana Amato (now a sophomore at Mizzou (University of Missouri)), Kevin Burton (a Senior at St. Mary High School), Camille Adams (a Sophomore at Seton Catholic Prep) and David Gieseki (a freshmen at Seton Catholic Prep).
Awardees typically have a long detailed history of the service they have been involved in so it is never too early to discern if this is the type of competition that is right for your child. All the applicants have said the process is a wonderful opportunity in itself.  Applications are due in October of the students' 8th grade year, so service reaches back into 6th grade.
Congratulations again to Erika and Garrett!

Seeking to build a Retreat Team

As part of our strategic plan, our community has asked for spiritual retreat experiences for our students across all grade levels and we want to get this process going.  If you are interested in joining staff members and Fr. Gary for this new committee, we are looking for community members who can share ideas and be involved in this ministry for our children.  No experience required - just a willingness to discuss, share, investigate and obtain information for our teachers, and/or help with planning and carrying out retreats for students.  Please join us at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20th in the Library.

Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to John & Maria Zanotti, winners for the Volunteer of the Month! You have won the fabulous "rock star" parking spot in front for the entire month! You were nominated because of the excellent job you two did in setting up and decorating at St Benedict's for the Christmas program and Our Lady of Guadalupe. We appreciate how effortlessly you hauled the decorations from storage, set-up, and restored them back. And you did it with enthusiasm! We appreciate you and we thank you! Enjoy that parking spot!
Honorable mention to the following who will remain in the drawing for volunteer of the month:
Joyce Petrowski (although you can't win, you are appreciated), Kari Czerniski, Chris Klee, Monica Spitza, and Dawn Tretter.
If you would like to nominate a volunteer of the month, you may do so by simply going to the front office and filling out the form. Each month we draw a winner who will receive the "rock star" parking spot beginning the 1st Thursday of the month through the 1st Wednesday of the following month. You can nominate as many different people as you want per month and anyone is eligible except: PTO Board Members, Advisory Board Members and School Staff.
Our apologies to Laura Decaro our winner last month for addressing you as Lauren and not Laura.

Teddy Bear Workshop

The Christ Child Society of Phoenix is planning a workday on January 23rd from 10:00 am to noon.  We are calling it a Teddy Bear Workshop and the purpose of it is to get students and their mothers interested in the Christ Child Society and volunteering.  It will be a very easy day of making bears that go into our “Bedtime Bags” which are given to social service agencies, such as Child Protective Services, to give to children when they are taken out of the home in an emergency situation.
Some of things that will be done are stuff bears, sew them shut by hand, and put faces on the bears and give them a name.  There will be pizza at noon.  The workshop is being held at Mt. Claret, located at 54th St. and Camelback in Phoenix.
This is open to any student as long as they are able to do any of the above tasks.  Please contact Bette Laatch at 480-296-9188 or Lisa Campbell at lcampbell@sjbosco.org to sign up or for more information.

Symbols of Advent

During the Month of December, the students were treated to the symbols of Advent each day.  To complete the Advent season, please share the following with your children as our preparation for the arrival of Jesus continues.

Monday, December 21 the symbol is an Anchor.  Think of Jesus as an anchor.  When your life doesn't seen to be going very well, or when you hear the news and all the problems of the works, knowing that Jesus is your anchor is comforting. When you think of the symbol for today, Thank God for giving you an Anchor to keep you close.

Tuesday December 22 the symbol is a Song.  Remember those times that you've been so happy that you just had to dance? Or whistle? Or sing? God's arrival as a tine Baby, born to be our Saviour, puts a song in our hearts every year.

Wednesday, December 23 the symbol represents All of Us.  This reminds us that God's salvation story is for all of us.  Every country, every nationality belongs to Him.  Our Savior loves and cares for the whole world.  After supper, say a prayer for missionalires in other countiries.  As the family to think of ways they can help.

Thursday, December 24 the symbol is a Poinsettia.  This bright red plant is a special symbol.  The leaves and the flower petals look just alike, except for their colors.  The green leaves mysteriously turn into red flower petals, symbolizing the blood that Jesus will shed on the cross for us.
The flower is beautiful, just like God's Christmas gift for us.  The Christ Child brought love, healing, forgiveness and salvation.  That is beautiful!

Friday, December 25.  A Star
The star appeared to them again, standing over Bethlehem.  Their joy knew no bounds -- Matthew 2:9-10
Do some star gazing on this Christmas night.  Like the shepherds, keep joy in your heart and tell others about the Christmas story.  Like the wise men, keeping looking up and following the savior.

From the faculty, staff and administration of St. John Bosco Interparish School,
Merry Christmas.

Please make your CTODP contribution by December 31st.  Our school code is 211

All families are required to participate in this win-win opportunity for our school and our students at a level that works best for your family. Lots of really good information this week,  please read all the way down!

No experience required - just a willingness to discuss, share, investigate, and obtain information for our teachers, and/or help with planning and carrying out retreats for students.  Please join us at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20th in the Library.

Self-Discipline LEADERSHIP SKILLS – Social Skills  #5

For the past two weeks we have been working on Social Skills. Explaining to the students that they have been using Social Skills all of their life has been very enlightening for them. People may define Social Skills as manners, etiquette, amenities or just plain being nice. Social Skills can be as simple as a smile, a wave, a handshake and as complex as understanding other cultures so we do not embarrass someone or offend them because of our lack of grace.

Every day there are opportunities for adults to prompt children to demonstrate social behaviors. When children walk into the school building, classroom or office, an adult who expects to receive a greeting back greets them. Children are taught to use an adult’s proper title or name or look at or toward them and exchange “Hello” and “Good-Bye” greetings. They’re expected to say “Please” and “Thank You” when making requests of school staff and others. Teachers take every opportunity to reciprocate by making requests of children in a respectful manner.

This month work on acknowledging the importance of using Social Skills and manners to provide your children with the “edge” that is needed to be with and work with others. Check to see if leaving and greeting skills are used by family members as you come and go each day.

Enter the drawing before or after school through Monday, December 14th.  Winners get reserved, front-row seats and parking to the St. John Bosco Christmas program to be held on December 16th.  To enter, you will need to have contributed, or commit to contribute, to the CTODP program for this tax year 2009.  The drawing will be held on Tuesday, December 15th.

Year to date, $66,432.00 in tax revenues has been redirected to St. John Bosco by 88 contributors.

You have until December 31st to take the credit for SJB!  Thank you to the following families who have already made their CTODP contribution:  Ahearne, Andl, Anson, Arnold, Blanchard, Bottrill, Bowen, Breen, Broer, Buckel, Camp, Campbell, Condon, De La Rocha, Dorsey, Eckert, Elghoul, Figueroa, Friedl, Frusetta, Gonzales, Helfenbein, Hellmann, Jehle, Keller, Klee, Kominski, Legan, Lincoln, Lisi, Long, Malloy, Marchello, McAllister, McParlane, Minelli, Morrow, Mueller, Nimsger, O’Reilly, Parry, Peterson, Petrowski, Phlipot, Rebello, Rodriguez, Sanders, Sciarappo, Sheridan, Silver, Starr, Teer, Tiedeman, Tretter, Westberg and an additional 32 families have contributed anonymously.

CTODP Scholarships

The number and amount of scholarships awarded in the spring, for the 2010-2011 school year, depends on the success of our campaign right now.  Remember, this is NOT a donation. It is a redirection of a small portion of the tax dollars that you have ALREADY paid to the state.  Why not take some back and apply it to something that really matters to you…the education of your child!  Go online today to make your contribution.  Our school code is 211.

CTODP – Need Cash?  Tempe Schools Credit Union Loans

Tax law requires that you fund your CTODP participation no later than December 31, 2009.  Even though you get a tax credit for your monies, you do not receive that credit until your 2009 tax return is filed and processed.  If you would like to participate in CTODP but lack the ready credit or cash, TSCU offers an interest-free loan specifically designed to fund CTODP in your name and allow you to pay it back with the proceeds from your tax return.  The deadline for the TSCU tax credit loan is DECEMBER 22nd.  You will also need to go into the branch to complete the paperwork.  There is a TSCU branch located on Chandler Blvd., just east of Rural Rd on the North side of the road.

Special Teachers and Staff Christmas Gift

Since we have had such an overwhelming response in the last few days for the collection for Specials Teachers and Staff we will be extending the deadline until Monday, December 14th at 12:00 noon sharp.  If you would like more information contact Marla Mikaelian or Sue Peterson.

WINTER WONDERLAND….A  HUGE SUCCESS

The SJB Moms’ Club thanks our wonderful community for their support of the 2009 Winter Wonderland.  It snowed and snowed. In fact 15 tons of snow blew into the courtyard courtesy of D.L. Withers Construction Co.,  (sponsor of the snow) on Saturday, December 5th.  Over 400 parents, friends and students witnessed the snowball throws and making snowmen (George the Giant Snowman appeared). The MPR was transformed into a candy cane wonderland complete with red & white table decorations that are available for sale and so yummy to look at. There were scores of folks eating a hearty pancake breakfast cooked by the Dads’ Club, doing Christmas shopping with 21 boutique vendors present along with a Christmas boutique area just for the children and children make their own Christmas ornaments.  What would a Winter Wonderland be without a visit from Santa Claus – he was very busy listening to every child who wished to share their list with him and to get a keepsake photo with the jolly old man himself.  There was even a street hockey tournament on the basketball courts for all ages – a new event to add more excitement and activity to Winter Wonderland.  All the proceeds from the event benefitted SJB.

The Moms’ Club thanks the following sponsors:  ADM Group. D.L. Withers Construction, Fry’s Food and Drug Stores, Safeway, Sara Lee Corporation (Joe and Kim Cecere), Shamrock  Foods, Starbucks Coffee (Ray and 101 – Chandler),  Starbucks (Ray and 54th St. – Chandler), and Woolaver ClearSmiles Orthodontics.  Special thank you’s are extended to:  Shelly Angelo, Kim Caruso, Chris  Cundary, Cupz n’ Crepes, Gold Crown Promotions, Terri Lisi, Marta Malloy, The Pilates Studio, Dean Rosales, Santa Claus, SJB Dads’ Club and  Sodexo Food Services for their support and generosity.  We also thank the many volunteers who helped with set-up, clean-up, bussing tables, snow patrol, street hockey and the list goes on.

Boutique Vendors – the  Moms’ Club thanks the following vendors:  A Special Treasure, Art Rocks Studio, Barbara Standlee, Barefoot Books, BeeBee by Designs,  Brilliant Sky Toys, ChicksCare, Daises and Dots, East Valley Glass Art, Elizabeth Cox with Watkins, Mary Farmer, Herbalife, Images by Nancy G, Joie’s Cozy Blankets, Le Bella Beads, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Sashay, SchoolTime Bows, Seasonal Sensations, Silpada Jewelry and Southern Living Home Décor.  The event wouldn’t be the same without all of you.

Under the leadership of Laura DeCaro, the following Moms showcased their time and talent in planning this year’s event:  Kerrie Adams, Kathy Boyle, Angelina Brown, Nicole Burnett, Melissa Cardine, Lee Evans, Renee Feil, Caryn Flores, Chris Grossgold, Jena Gump, Sarah Lisi, Sue Peterson, Michele Phillippi, Mari Rubio, and Cecilia Sanders.

Special thank you to the families who donated new pajamas for the charity, Jamma Jingles.  There will be dozens of children receiving new pajamas this year due to your generosity.

Principal Shelley Conner, Assistant Principal Mary Reese, Operations Manager Mimi Condon,  Development Director Lisa Campbell, Administrative Assistant Dorothy Abril and Receptionist Diane Haik and Maintenance Supervisor Scott Fuhrmark.  Thank you to the faculty for their support of the many fliers distributed in the classrooms prior to the event.

The Scrip Office will be open from 10:30-12:15 PM on Friday, December 18th.  That will be your final day to buy Scrip for those last minute Christmas items.  We will be open our regular hours next week Monday and Wednesday 2:30-3:15 & Tuesday and Thursday 7:30-8:30.

IMPORTANT: If you are planning on sending gift cards in the mail, please remember the following:

  1. Pack them in bubble wrapped envelopes.  When gift cards are in regular envelopes they can get stuck in mail sorters causing damage to the envelope and loss of gift cards.
  2. Record all serial numbers before mailing, so if they are lost or stolen, we can help you get them replaced.  Without these numbers, we are unable to replace the lost cards.

Do you regularly shop or dine at your favorite places and wonder why we don't carry Scrip for it?  Maybe we can.  Just email us at sjbscrip@sjbosco.org and we will look into it and get back to you.

ARIZONA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE (12/10/09)

House Committee Makes Recommendations on Scholarship Program
On Thursday, a special House committee agreed to 22 recommendations designed to increase accountability and transparency, while also increasing savings to the state.

It should be noted that the vast majority of the proposals were unanimously agreed to by all legislative members on the panel and that an entire package of recommendations were approved on a bipartisan vote of 4-1.
Among the most meaningful recommendations adopted was a proposal to expressly prohibit donations for specific students that involve swaps between taxpayers.  Additionally, school tuition organizations would also face new requirements relating to auditing, certification, the consideration of financial need when granting scholarships, and reporting the amount of scholarships provided to children in need.

The House committee also recognized that tuition tax credits are saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars a year by keeping students in private schools.  Accordingly, the final package of adopted recommendations included a suggestion to increase the current tax credit limits of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for married couples to $750 and $1,500.
The Arizona Catholic Conference looks forward to continuing to work with legislators and others to make a great program even better during the next legislative session.

In the meantime, please remember to make your tuition tax credit contributions if you have not already done so.
On behalf of the many needy children struggling to stay in the school of their choice, I strongly encourage you to visit the websites for either the Catholic Tuition Support Organization (Diocese of Tucson) or the Catholic Tuition Organization of the Diocese of Phoenix  and make your dollar for dollar tax credit contribution today.

Advisory Board Reports Follow this link to read previous November Meeting added.

Summary of SJB Advisory Board Meeting, November 23, 2009

The Board received reports from the Principal, Pastor and Faculty Representative; Development, Technology, Communications and Facilities committees; plus updates from the Moms' and Dads' Clubs and PTO at its November 23rd meeting.  The highlights follow:

Principal’s Report.  Principal Conner reports that Liturgy Committee has made plans for Advent to include Monday morning prayer gathering and morning announcements that feature Advent focus on prayer and theology.

In general, the surveys say, that for the most part, parents, students and teachers are happy at SJB and feel we are doing what our mission promises we will do.  There is always room for improvement and places we want to grow.  Currently, the focus with the survey results is to determine:

·        What we are already doing that needs to be communicated  better

·        What we are not doing that we should be doing

·        What we are doing that we should stop doing

·        What are the priorities

Although still above Diocesen average, there was a small decline in growth in Math at one grade level.  This was anticipated last year and was already addressed at the beginning of this school year in order to keep the students on track for excellent ITBS scores.

Progress reports went out and K-3 were added to RenWeb grade book so that parents can see grades for individual assignments.  The report cards will continue to be skill based grades.

We have seen a marked decrease in initial missing assignments and virtually no long term missing assignments due to the Academic Make-Up for grades 5-8.

Open house and panel presentation at St. Andrews Mom’s Club went very well.

Parish Report.  Father Gary reports that the Cub Scouts at St. Benedict's and SJB are now one pack. Troops 77 and 118 will work together to bridge the connection between what was formerly the school and the parish groups.

Preparation for sacrament is continuing to be conducted at each child's home parish.  The parents and pastor are to determine if the child is ready for the sacrament.

Faculty Report.  Scott Brandt reports that Pre-K began their Atrium program.  First graders presented their annual ABC’s of Thanksgiving to the parents.  Second graders presented their saint reports and wrote letters to veterans.  Third graders have a teaching mass with Father Gary.  Fourth graders presented their saint reports and have been working on field guide pages for plant, animal, mineral and landform classification.  Fifth graders had two veterans speak to their class.  Sixth graders are busy creating Power Points about Ancient India and China and also continued their tradition of Thanksgiving Prayer Service.

In Music, students are preparing for the annual Christmas program.  All grade levels are keeping busy in Art with the Elements of Art, positive/negative shapes, warm/cool color and movement composition, overlapping leaf composition, leaf stencils/pastels and hand print trees.  In PE, girls are completing basketball & softball while boys are working on basketball and archery.  Primary grades are having holiday fun with a Thanksgiving theme of loco motor skills & games.  Winter sports kicked-off this month with girls' softball and boys' basketball.

Conferences were held with parents/students this month.  Teachers and staff are reviewing conference logistics to determine if any changes should be made.  Teachers love all the great food that was provided.  This really helps at conference time since there is very limited break time.

Facilities.  In conjunction with the PTO, the committee is in the process of making design decisions and obtaining quotes for the carpool shade structure.  Tree planning is substantially complete with ongoing work to adjust irrigation and add stakes.  ATV is being used to drag the infield.  Sub-group met to discuss rental of Ball-field.  Final date for Bosco Golf, Dinner & Auction is April 24, 2010.

Development.  CTODP is in full swing with Internet Café at 8am on December 2nd and 10th  in the conference room.  This is a great way to make your CTODP contribution and enter the drawing for front row seating at this year's Christmas program.  Tempe Schools Credit Union will be offering 0% loans for CTODP again this year.

We are following up with the families that expressed interest in our school from the Open House.

The Pre-K classroom received a set of free books from Wilbooks.  Miss Whalen and Mrs. Guthrie received the USA Today paper online for use in their classrooms. Mrs. Douglas is currently working on the requirements for the Red Robin U-ACT grant.

Arbor Day event was a huge success.  The CAP students did a wonderful job and received many complements from the Arbor Day staff and Home Depot volunteers.  Hopefully, everyone saw the articles in the Ahwatukee Republic and the Ahwatukee Foothills News.

Technology.  The committee is working on updating the technology plan and providing a set of long term solutions.  A technology survey went out – there is no survey to complete but parents, teachers and students are asked to submit their top 3 suggestions/concerns/wants to the following email address tech(at)sjbosco.org.

Communications.  The committee reviewed their open house parish bulletin article project with success at some parishes and determined need to expand relationships with other parishes.  They identified a list of media outlets to include on their contact list.  Press releases were identified for Winter Wonderland, Christmas program and the Scout Camp-Out.  The committee is continuing their work on the marketing plan.

Dads' Club.  The dads will be cooking breakfast at Winter Wonderland.  Turkey Bowl was held the day after Thanksgiving (black Friday).

Moms' Club.  The complete calendar of events is listed on the SJB website.  Winter Wonderland is Saturday, December 5th.  This event will feature a hot pancake breakfast, photo with Santa, vendor boutique, a Children’s boutique (new this year), street hockey game and raffles.  The Moms' Club is collecting new pajamas for Jamma Jingles, a 501c-3 charity which distributes PJ’s to children affected by domestic violence and homelessness.  Moms' Club received sponsorships from D.L. Withers (snow), ADM Group and Starbucks (coffee) for this event.

PTO.  The PTO is working with Administration and the Facilities Committee on the carpool shade project.  A community meeting was held on Wednesday, December 2nd.  Family Dinner night at Native New Yorker (both Ahwatukee locations) and Family Movie Night were well attended.

The December Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 14th at 5:30 pm. Please contact President Lynn Beck 10 days before the meeting to request an item be placed on the agenda.

SJB Advisory Board Members:  Lynn Beck, President; Lynn Grennan, Vice President; Joyce Petrowski, Secretary; Bill Mager, Mike Rafford, Greg Hayes, Collin Bottrill, Chris Bowen, Eduardo Gamez and Kathy Boyle.  Ex-officio Members: Father Gary Regula, Principal Shelley Conner, Faculty Representative Scott Brandt, and St. Benedict’s Parish Council Member Mick McLaughlin.

An attitude of gratitude

We have so much to be thankful for as a community that walks with Christ as our guide. We are be able to share our blessings with each other, every day, at school, at work and and play. For example,  Mrs. Douglas and the 6th, 7th and 8th graders are working diligently recognizing how to make their voices, and the meaning behind their voices, nice.  The lunch room volunteers encourage the children to say please and thank you, and today, during the feasts that were around campus, the students were being kind and using their good manners. The students wrote letters last week to the people who made a difference in their lives and throughout them all were the lines "thank you", "thank you for caring for me".  As we move into the season of Advent, we have the opporturnity to practice living with gratitude.  A deep sense of humility for the gifts we received and a waiting for an opportuinty to use those gifts to glorify God.    Perhaps the poet and art historian Johannes A. Gaertner said it best in Worldly Virtues, “To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.”

Kindness Counts in the U-Act Program

When as the last time you did something nice for someone else? Well now, more than ever, kindness counts! During the school year SJB will be participating in the Red Robin Foundation U-ACT Program. What is U-ACT? It stands for "Unbridled Acts," or random acts of kindness. This national program encourages students to be kind to others at school, as well as give back to the communities we live in.
This year we will be implementing new programs in our school and community that will involve our students. The U-ACT Program will honor schools that demonstrate what it means to be "Unbridled." Students and schools across the country will be doing the same thing in hopes of being awarded one of ten grants from $1,200 to the grand prize of $10,000. If we are chosen as a winning school, we will not only earn a grant, but we'll be invited to participate in a special school spirit night at our local Red Robin restaurant.
We've already started with our "Put-Ups" campaign. Come by and look at the Put-Ups posted outside the MPR that our 7th & 8th graders created. Below is a sample of Put-Ups that our 6th graders have written about each other.

Scrip News

Harkins Cups and Gift cards will be ready for pick-up on Wednesday December 2nd and Friday December 4th during Scrip office hours.  If you can not make it at either of those times, please email us at sjbscrip(at)sjbosco.org and we'll set up another time for you to pick-up your order.

With the holidays fast approaching, if you need gift cards for presents please try to get your order to the Scrip office at a minimum 1 week before you need your order ready.  We run out of a lot of items during this time of year but we can usually get them back in stock within a week.  Thanks in advance for working with us!

For all those families that ship gift cards in the mail, DO NOT use a regular envelope to ship the cards.  The envelop may get snagged and shredded in the mail sorting machine.  Use an envelop with bubble wrap on the inside.  Also before shipping, make sure that you write down all serial numbers in case the cards do get lost.  Without serial numbers we can not try to get replacement cards.

Is there anyone out there that would like to purchase Office Depot?  We have $150.00 that we accidentally ordered.  Please stop by the Scrip office if you are interested.

November 20, 2009

From Mrs. Conner

We all have favorite character-building quotations that we share with our children regularly, often to the chagrin of the child.  One of my favorites  at home or school is "Accidents happen when you are goofing around", and in the classroom, "Habits of action become habits of mind".   If you have ever heard your child say, maybe with a touch of sarcasm,  "I know, I know, attitude is as important as ability"  probably means you  are using mantras with your children on a regular basis.  We can probably all come up with one, or many, that were used on us as children-- ones that helped shape us in to who we are today.
Consider the simple poem:  "Good, better, best!  I will never rest until my good is better and my better is my best.  That's the secret to success."  It begins with the premise that we are good, and so we are.  We are created by a loving God and have free will and make choices in freedom for the present and for eternity.  We entered creation "good" and the choices we make lead us to better ourselves or to hurt ourselves. The poem focuses on "better" choices- practicing self control, helping another person, inviting others to play, sticking with a tough homework assignment.  These choices help the child become a better person a little bit each day.  When being a little bit better today than yesterday becomes a pattern, soon the personal best emerges.  All the while, these positive choices help shape a child's confidence in their abilities.
Aphorisms such as these are abundant in the classrooms.  Students take notice of the posters on the wall, the sayings at the prayer table, the quotes that the teachers use in their daily language.  Imagine a child in a classroom 6 hours a day, with messages such as these on the edge of their vision-- "With God all things are possible"  "life is full of choices, choose carefully", "No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted", "If you want a friend, be a friend". These seep into the soul over time.

Self-Discipline LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Share: Time, Space, People, Things  #4
Share (shar) v. something two or more people do together, or partake in together. Unless people know how to share, no unit of society can function peacefully and effectively. (taken from DWP)
Sharing time is waiting, and it is hard to wait when your hand is up and you have something to say, or listening to friends without monopolizing the conversation, and beginning an assignment on time when asked to. We are helping our students to understand how important sharing time is to the entire classroom dynamics.
Sharing personal space is an imaginary cube that surrounds you twelve inches on all sides. The students are learning that wherever they are, honoring someone’s personal space is very important.
Sharing people is very difficult when several students want to talk at the same time with one teacher. Students are being taught to wait their turn. Do your children wait their turn to speak at home or are they constantly interrupting? If so, remind them of the skill of sharing people; that they may have to wait their turn even at home. Students are taught that unless they have an emergency, they will have to wait until their turn to talk.
Sharing things can also be difficult. There are three guidelines that might be helpful for you at home:
1.      Ask permission to use items that are not mine
2.      Use borrowed materials for a reasonable amount of time
3.      Return the item in the same condition I received it

Parents, Teachers, and Students.

The SJB Technology Committee is in the process of updating our 5 year Technology Plan in coordination with the Diocese of Phoenix, and we need your help.  Please let us know your top 3 technology concerns, needs, and/or suggestions by sending a quick email to technology@sjbosco.org.  This is a great opportunity for your voice to be heard and to influence the direction of the technology that supports our staff, students, and parents.  No online survey.  No form to fill out.  Just your quick thoughts in an email is all it takes.
And while you are thinking about technology, perhaps you would like to have an even greater ongoing impact.  The SJB Technology Committee is looking for new parent volunteers to assist us with the actions and activities required to keep our current environment up and running, and to implement new technologies.  This is a great way to earn volunteer hours while having a meaningful impact and a little fun at the same time.  If you are interested, please let us know at technology@sjbosco.com.  Thanks, and we hope to see you at our next Technology committee meeting.

Scholarships

Did you know the scholarships you apply for in the spring are funded by the efforts of the CTODP campaign in the fall and winter?  CTODP is our school’s largest source of scholarship funding for our families.  For the 2009/2010 school year, St. John Bosco raised $275,663 in tax credit revenues from 382 CTODP contributors.  Our CTODP applicants had $410,903 in qualified financial need.  CTDOP awarded 133 scholarships to St. John Bosco students with severe financial need.
Every dollar you give to CTODP is a dollar less you have to pay in Arizona taxes. (maximum tax credit is $1,000 married/$500 singles)

Self-Discipline LEADERSHIP SKILLS – Share: Time, Space, People, Things #4

This week and next we will be working on the concept of sharing. Below are some helpful phrases we are using in school:
· Please show me your personal space.
· You need to share this space. Describe how this will look and sound.
· This is your time. This is my time.
· Monitor your voice in the space we share.
· Twenty-three people need to share the teacher. What will you have to do?
Talk to your child about how they share time, (when you eat, listen to others, others listening to you, playing games, etc.) space (sharing space in the classroom, library, tech lab, lunchroom, lining up, playground, etc.), people (teachers, teammates, friends, parents, siblings, etc.) and things (TV, computer, cell phones, games, video games, toys, books, desks, food, etc.).

Diocese of Phoenix Grading Scale

Based on the norm of the Catholic Elementary Schools in the Diocese of Phoenix, we are adjusting our grading scale to match the other Catholic Elementary schools. The following grading scale applies for grades 4–8:
        100-94 = A     93-85 = B     84-75 = C     74-65 = D     64-0 = F
Final grades are letter grade translations of the four quarter numerical averages.
Eligibility for sports requires no D's or F's.  The numerical cut-off with the new scale is 75 or above for eligibility.

Academic Make-Up

Throughout the year I watch the web and flow of the academic grading challenge, and the emotional roller coaster for parents and students. It seems that  in every quarter there are parents (and sometime students) scrambling at the last minute, begging for credit for turning in an assignment or make-up work from weeks prior.  The simple mathematics of calculating grades makes missing or incomplete assignments devastating to a student's grades, even when they know the material.  As a school, we strive to maintain a grade reporting system that reflects what the student knows, but it is very hard when students have missing or incomplete assignments.
In our quest to teach organizational strategies and accountability, we have introduced "Academic Make-Up".  Every Tuesday, we check RenWeb,-- looking for missing assignments and incomplete work.  We send you an email alerting you of the find, and encourage the student to get it taken care of quickly.  If they get it taken care of on Wednesday, great!  If it still hasn't happened by Thursday, we offer the library with a teacher as a quiet place to focus on make-up work.  As a parent you are welcome to come and help your child organize, study, focus, or ask questions.  This is not punishment!  We want it to be a learning opportunity for the students.  If you haven't received one of the emails yet, here is what it looks like (with a few editorial comments):

You are receiving this notice because your child (this is a bulk email, so we are not able to tell you which child) needs to stay after school Thursday, 8/27 for Academic Make-Up. (This is not detention and is not logged in RenWeb) They either have an assignment missing, they forgot to turn it in, it is incomplete or they were absent. If they are able to get the completed assignment in to their teachers by Wednesday, then attendance on Thursday will not be necessary.  (The grade may not show up right away, depending on when they turned it in, when their class meets, the teacher's schedule and their available prep time). Please check RenWeb for the missing assignments. Students will report to the school library at 3:05pm where a teacher will be available to monitor and answer any questions.
We recommend that you ask your child first about the assignments, and if there are any other questions to email their teacher. (Mrs. Kopplin is only the messenger - please do not respond to her email)
We encourage you to let us help teach students that "doing it right the first time takes less time".
Thank you for your cooperation!

We are still figuring out how to best track Academic Make-Up without it being a more of a paperwork nightmare than receiving assignments all at the end of the quarter. We have made a few slight changes on our end, hoping to make it as smooth as possible for teachers, students and parents.

Obama’s National Address to Students will be held on Tuesday, September 8 at 12:00 noon Eastern Time.

There is no school on Tuesday (or Monday)  If you would like your child to see or hear President Obama's speech tune in from home.  Information and activities are available at
www.ed.gov/admins/lead/academic/bts.html . This site is targeted for teachers so may not be appropriate without parental input.   We recommend you review the information before you decide to use it with your children.

ITBS

The Iowa Test for Basic Skills (ITBS) is a standardized test which will be given by all Phoenix Diocesan Schools this September for Second through Eighth Grades.    The results of the ITBS  are determined by using standard procedures which all teachers follow.  Each student’s score is calculated only by comparison with all other  grade equivalent students in the nation that took the test during the same time frame.  Saint John Bosco will be testing September 10th-18th with make-up tests  scheduled for September 21st-23rd.

Two important uses of the scores are to check year-to-year progress in the basic or developmental skills and to determine each student’s relative strengths and weaknesses.  To accomplish these purposes most effectively, test results must be available early in the school year so that teachers and administrators have a chance to incorporate that information in the decisions they make regarding quality instruction.  September is an optimal month because it’s early in the year, but late enough so that the teachers have had a chance to establish rapport with their students and students have had time to adjust to their new surroundings.

The Diocese of Phoenix made a commitment to use the Complete Battery form of the ITBS which tests most curricular areas.  This allows Saint John Bosco and you as parents, to get a complete understanding of your child’s educational profile.  This test also gives us the opportunity to utilize the results for diagnostic purposes.

Students will be tested the first half of each testing day. If your child does not come to school on time or is absent, he or she WILL NOT be able to take the test(s) designated for that time frame with his or her class.  He or she will be required to take the missed test(s) on a make up day with other students who were absent.

In order for your child to achieve optimal results, please adhere to the following suggestions:

  • Realize the importance of being at school during testing week
  • Be on time to school
  • Eat a good breakfast
  • Maintain established routines
  • Review test taking strategies
  • Do your best
  • Complete all answers

Don’t spend too much time on any one question (the format of the test is not  sequenced by difficulty)
If you have further questions regarding testing please contact me through email or voice mail.

Self-Discipline LEADERSHIP SKILLS - REASONS FOR RULES #7

Week 3One of the best ways to promote and enforce rules is to show what a rule looks like and what a rule should not look like. Grades 6 - 8 students have accomplished this and have become the teachers for the entire school on rules.
For the next two weeks K – 8 grades will be viewing the presentations. Ask your child what some of the “No Go Zones” are, what the safety rules are for the swings, slides or bars and what the dress code rules are and how they were performed by the 6 – 8 grades. If you have a 6 – 8 grade student, ask them what they did specifically to teach the entire school about rules.

Christmas Program – International Children

The annual Christmas Program (K-6, Choir and Dance Club) will be on Wednesday, December 16 with performances at 1:15P.M. and 6:30P.M. at St. Benedict Church.  If your K-6 student is interested in participating in the “International Children Finale” please read the link below.  If you decide to participate, you might want to consider sewing your costume or ordering it at this time.  Since the December 2010 Christmas Program will not include “International Children” you might want to enjoy the opportunity this year!  Link:  www.sjbosco.org/academics/specials/mrs-hamilton/christmas-program/international-children/

Plan on attending Service to Life on September 29

This is an opportunity to introduce your children to service as a way of life.  Representatives from many organizations around the valley will be in our MPR showcasing what they do and how the Catholic community can help.  You or your child can be the one that makes the difference. Promote serving the greater community--it is often the experiences of childhood that impact the actions of adulthood.

More Ways to Bring Money to Our School

There are currently two additional programs that bring money to the school.  Both are grocery store programs: Fry's Cool Cash and Basha's Thanks A Million.  These programs do not give Scrip $'s.  They are very easy to participate in and require you to link our school number to your grocery card once a year.  That's how easy it is.

Just bring in your Fry's V.I.P. card, let the cashier know that you want to link your card to St. John Bosco and give them our school code: 10704.

The Basha's fundraising program, Thanks A Million for Friends and Neighbors, will run from September 1st, 2009 to March 31st, 2010.  Just bring your Basha's Thank You card on or after September 1st to any Basha's cashier, let them know you want to link your card to St. John Bosco and give them our school number: 28585.

Scrip News

Winners for our Back-to-School Scrip promotion are posted on the website!  Thank you to all of the families who participated by buying Scrip during the promotion.

We are now carrying Jason's Deli, Paradise Bakery, Hallmark, and Del Taco!

We still need helpers to sell Scrip in the carpool lane on Monday and Wednesday 2:30-3:15 and Fridays 12:30-1:15.  It's a fun and easy way to earn volunteer hours while meeting and socializing with other families at St. John Bosco.  Come see us during our office hours if you are interested in finding out more.
