Hands on Books

Thanks to the generous support of the SJB community and the ambitious reading of SJB students, Mrs. Harvey and staff members will be delivering books to the Mesa Detention Center on Monday, June 8.  Students read over 700 books and collected nearly 600 dollars with proceeds going to the purchase of books the children may take home to keep. Your read-a-thon donation will be used to give this special literary gift to children who may never have owned a book before.   Find comfort in knowing your support and hard work will help a child in unfortunate circumstances.

The Bosco Golf, Dinner, and Auction!

Thank you again to all who participated in The Bosco Golf, Dinner, and Auction!  The event was yet another legendary fun-raiser and fund-raiser, with 176 golfers at Club West, 340 diners enjoying Carrabba's Italian Grill and The Cheesecake Factory, and 36 sponsors.  The school campus was beautifully transformed as "The Night on Nile" took us to ancient Egypt in near-perfect weather.  The latest results on sales from the 8th Annual Golf
Tournament, "The Souk" and "The Treasure Room" show a net profit of over $71K, which this year will help fund the construction projects on campus.  Thank you once again to our sponsors and participants, and to our team leaders and volunteers without whom the event is simply not possible.  Look for more information, and announcements on how you can get involved, at www.sjbosco.org/TheBosco

Use Your Vacation to Help Those in Need

Ever go to a hotel and NOT use the miniature travel size toiletries? Did you know that many organizations such as Paz de Cristo use those exact items to make small toiletry bags for the homeless? As you travel in hotels this summer, consider grabbing those and bringing them back to SJB. Miss Krakora will take them to Paz de Cristo for you. Also, if you have infants/toddlers at home, use the summer to go through clothes that don't fit anymore. If you don't have a family member or neighbor to pass them to, bring them to SJB. Miss Krakora will bring them to AWC and Maggie's Place for pregnant women and new mothers in need.

May 29, 2009

From Mrs. Conner

As we close the school year, I offer my congratulations to all the students for helping to build the culture of success here at St. John Bosco.  I have witnessed children who forgo the norms of the current culture, including sitting in front of a TV, "hanging out", playing video games, or doing nothing to instead spend time working on math facts, writing and revising essays, and reading many, many books (272.4 million words read by students this year, according to statistics at Accelerated Reader).  Students are actively involved with chess club, dance, tutoring, and sports- keeping their minds and bodies active.  Our students and families participated in prayer, writing letters to residents of nursing homes, collecting and delivering food for St. Vincent de Paul, creating a Christmas for 19 families, collecting game closet supplies for children in the hospital, and prayer and corresponded with 12 Pequenos Hermanos. Additionally, we raised money to help Feed my Starving Children, provide books for incarcerated youth, new mothers in need, and a variety of programs through our February "Closest to your Heart" Campaign.  Our parents recorded over 16366.02 hours to the school and went out of their way to use scrip, knowing that their everyday activities can create a payback to the school. I am honored to be part of a community that places such a value on the academic, physical, and spiritual developmental of its children. God has blessed each of us.  Have a restful summer and we are already looking forward to next year.

BIG News from CTODP

Effective July 1, 2009, CTODP will allow school families to solicit tuition assistance using “student recommendations”—a method of tax-credit giving whereby the donor can recommend a particular student for an award.     Families must establish an account for each student registered in a Diocesan Catholic school.  Registration forms will be distributed to schools before the end of the 2008/9 school year—contact the Finance Office.  Families will also be able to get registration and contribution forms as well as more information about the program online at www.catholiceducationfund.org when it is launched on July 1st.
Parents are not allowed to designate their own child, nor is reciprocity allowed. School families should continue to donate to the St. John Bosco general fund or the Diocesan general fund.  Then, materials will be made available to solicit additional funds directed to your child. All families now using “student recommendations” through other School Tuition Organizations (STOs) are encouraged to instead set up an account through CTODP, which alone provided nearly $14 million in funds to primarily lower-income Catholic school families this year.  CTODP pays a higher percentage (93% vs. 90% for the other tuition organizations).

Take a minute to share your date preference for the 2009-2010 Harvest Fest.

and Jimmy McCormick - Sports Commissioner
Thank you and congratulations to everyone who ran for office.  Win or loose, you have learned from the experience of making a commitment and following through.

Lunch Billing

We have added the outstanding lunch balances to Accounting Menu in RenWeb.  Sign on to RenWeb, and on the accounting button, click details to see what is payable for "Lunch" and what is MAP.  These are static amounts as of May 21, 2009.  If you have paid or your child has had lunch since that date, the update is not included. There are times that students may purchase a hot lunch even though the parent had packed them a lunch (they can't find it or they left it in the car, your child didn't like what you packed, or even sometimes they ate the whole lunch for snack).  We have started having the students sign their name when they eat without ordering in the morning.  We try not to let a child go hungry.

Also, we say thank you to Eamonn Ahearne and Bruce Lincoln for their service on the Board. Both of them are leaving the Board as their terms have ended. New members surfaced from the nominating drive and voted in by the 2008-09 board include Eduardo Gamez, Chris Bowen, and Collin Botrill.  We appreciate all the parents that were willing to put their application in and all candidates were well qualified.

DID YOU KNOW???

*On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months. Summer school classes targets these skills and helps to prevent learning loss.
*Summer school can actually make summer more fun! By allowing brief periods of regular study and still allowing plenty of time for leisure, your children may learn to appreciate leisure time more and be less likely to become bored.
*Summer courses are designed to help your child become more academically prepared for the next year's work. They will in turn feel more comfortable about entering the next grade. Past students speak about my class...
"I love summer school. It made me feel better about coming to 2nd grade. I already knew my teacher, and I felt smarter."
"I think summer school was better than regular school!"
"I was afraid of coming to 2nd grade because I did bad in 1st grade. Summer school helped me get better at math facts, so I could do good in 2nd grade."

Summer School - Several of the classes are already filled, but others have a few openings

Study Skills Class
Could your child benefit from learning how to plan out school projects such as book reports, science fair projects, etc.? Join the Study Skills class taught this summer taught by Ms. Lynch! Explore different and fun ways to study. Each week we will break apart a different long term project and plan out each step. Have fun AND get organized! Sign up now before the class fills up!
Math and Language Summer Help
Is your incoming 1st or 2nd grade child in need of a challenge, a boost, or some more summer fun? Check out Miss Krakora's summer school classes!
Problem Solving/Critical Thinking summer school class!
Does your child (entering 5-8th grade) need an interesting challenge this summer?  If so, then sign them up for our Problem Solving/Critical Thinking summer school class!  Mrs. Byrnes plans to have lots of fun exploring with the students how to solve interesting thinking problems.  Be there or be “squared”.
Could your child (entering 5-8th grade) use some extra math practice, or do they need to be challenged with some new topics in math?  If so, then our Accelerated Math summer school class is the place to be!  The great thing about Acc. Math is that we can tailor the objectives to each individual student.  They work independently, but the teacher is there to give them the help they need.
Viva Espana
Spanish summer camp is a great way to introduce Spanish to new students and as a way to reinforce Spanish vocabulary learned throughout the school year. It's not too late sign up for Viva Espana and take a vacation to Spain this summer. OLE!!

Extra, Extra – Billy “the Kid” Captured at SJB Corral Hold’Em Tourney!!!

Yeehaw! “The Kid’s” been vanquished, and by none other than a pistol-totin’ lady gunnin’ by the name of Katie “the Schoolmarm” Muha – she sure did a number on “the Kid,” who was seen wanderin’ around the blackjack pits penniless early in the evening!!!
While there’s tumbleweeds may be blowin’ in other parts of the southwest, the Corral was hoppin’ this past weekend and we really appreciate the folk who turned out to take part in the tourney, blackjack and general socializin’.  The grub from SomeBurros was excellent, the servers with Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus courteous and efficient, and the jailhouse was near full by the time all was said and done – yeah, that’s right, we got some good pics for next year … evidence!
Apologies for that loud-mouth, cat-callin’ dealer (he’s my cousin) … Enos don’t get out much and he only learnt to count to 10, much less read cards with faces on ‘em.  While harmless, he tends to be funnier in his own mind!  Hah! Anyways, the coffers filled with ‘bout $500 that’s goin’ toward the SJB Scholarship Fund in the name of Tom Dillon.  Thanks to all those who came out to the event and we hope to see ya next year.

SJB Backyard Eagle Projects Complete!

In this school year, SJB was fortunate to have three different SJB student // Eagle Scout candidates offer to perform their service projects at SJB.
The projects were (1) the baseball dugout, infield, and batting cage renovation by Ryan Murphy of Troop 77, (2) the garden relocation and beautification by Matt Rainey of Troop 77, and (3) the installation of fun and fitness stations in the playground area by Wyatt Smith of Troop 118.
Each of these projects required extensive planning, fundraising, and volunteer coordination by the Eagle Scout candidate.  Next time you see Ryan, Matt, or Wyatt give them a round of applause for a job well done.  In order to get the 2009-2010 year off to a roaring start, SJB Moms' Club will be holding elections on May 20, 2009 (more information about meeting time and place to follow).

Chess Club

I just wanted to share some really great news with the community about how our St. John Bosco Bulldogs Chess Team did at the GOVERNOR'S CUP chess tournament held on May 2nd through the 3rd.  At this year's edition of this fine event we had six players in three different sections, each and every one of them playing their hearts out.  All of our players represented themselves, their families and their community by constantly displaying true sportsmanship and by displaying a competitive drive to win.  Each member of our chess team is well rounded having many interests in addition to chess.
Gabriel de la Rocha took 8th place in the K-3 section of the GOVERNOR'S CUP for a fantastic individual performance with a score of 7 out of 9.  Our K-3 team took tenth place at this year's edition of the ASCF championship tournament and this was out of a field of over 200 youngsters representing 75 different schools.  This year's Chess Team in the K-3 section consisted of: Gabriel de la Rocha, Vincent Hemingway, Ethan Jaravata and Jordan Ehmann.  In the Kindergartner section Luke Pavlina took 9th place while Christopher Rodriguez competed in the ultra tough K-6 section of the Governor's Cup.  Each of our young players learned more about chess and have become better players for having competed in such a tough event.
Next year we will have a much larger K-6 tournament chess team as several of our current players will be graduating into the 4th grade which means come Fall 2009, Christopher will have a team in his section!  Our Fall 2009 lineup looks very promising as we will be able to potentially field two very strong teams in the K-3 and in the K-6 divisions.  I look forward to helping each of our Bulldogs do and be their best at the Chess Club, at the tournaments and in life this coming Fall 2009.  Expect to hear more good news in the future about our Bulldogs Chess Team!
Your St. John Bosco Bulldogs Chess Coach
Coach Sean.

May 1, 2009

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 1 Corinthians 11:23-24
Congratulations to the young people at St. Andrews Parish that celebrated their First Holy Communions and Confirmation during the Masses on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.  A precious gift has been bestowed on each of you and we welcome you to the table for our school Masses.

The Bosco 2009 Preliminary Results...

Thank you to all who participated in The Bosco 2009 this past weekend.  The event was yet another great fun-raiser and fund-raiser with 176 golfers at Club West, 340 dinners enjoying Carrabba's Italian Grill and The Cheesecake Factory and 36 supporting sponsors.  The weather was near-perfect and the school campus was beautifully transformed as "The Night on Nile" took us to ancient Egypt.  Preliminary results on sales from the golf tournament, "The Souk" and "The Treasure Room" show an overall net profit of approximately $70K, which this year is targeted to help fund the construction projects on campus.  Thank you once again to all the participants, sponsors, and especially to our volunteers without whom we could not enjoy such a great event.

The Bosco 2009 - Dinner Raffle Winners and Pictures...

A few Dinner Raffle prizes have still not been claimed.  If you are holding a GREEN raffle ticket from the Dinner Raffle, go to ww.sjbosco.org/TheBosco to see if you are a winner.  Golf and Dinner photos can also be found via links on this same web page.  Thank you again for supporting The Bosco!

Summary of SJB Advisory Board Meeting, April 27, 2009

The Board received reports from the Principal, Pastor and Faculty Representative; Development, Finance, Technology and Facilities committees; plus updates from the Dads' Club and PTO, at its April 27th meeting.  The highlights follow:
Principal’s Report.  Principal Conner reported on the end of the year liturgy celebrations planned including First Communion reception, May crowning and graduation.  The administration is reviewing the strategic plan to make sure goals and objectives are being met based on benchmarks identified by the committees. The ball field lighting project is on target with submittal to the City of Phoenix of the plans for the construction permit. Principal Conner discussed the marketing efforts being done for Pre-K and Kindergarten and the possibility of adding a second Pre-K class. Parents are being surveyed now.  Decision will be made by early June.  Enrollment is expected to be 556 to start the school year.
Pastor’s Report and St. Benedict’s Parish Council Report. The Bishop officiated over the First Communion/Confirmation celebration at the church. The Parish met its CDA goal.  The Parish gave parishioners recyclable water bottles in honor of Earth Day.  The parish website is under construction to save on printing and paper, making the website the source for announcements and news.  The Anointing Mass is May 9th  at 11:00 am.  The Parish Mission is May 21-23, featuring Kevin Saunders and focusing on the Acts of the Apostles.  The Sanctity of Life Committee is sponsoring a baby shower for Elizabeth’s House.  The Parish Council and Finance Committees  are meeting in early May to work on the parish’s strategic  plan.  The Seder meal, hosted by Life Teen, was a success.  Elections are being held for two new members to serve on the Parish Council.  An open house is scheduled for April 29th for new families.
Facilities.  The new Pre-K building construction is on target.  Bids for the ball field lighting project are expected to go out in early May.  It is the desire of the committee to have the project underway at the same time as the parking lot project.  The Piper Grant projects (parking lot and roofing systems) will start this summer.  The Eagle Scout projects are completed.  Thanks to Kurt Broer for replacing and welding the batting cage stanchion pipe.  Discussions are continuing on the carpool shade structure by the PTO.  A grant has been submitted for a shade structure for the swing set area.
Financial.  Carin Wolph is a new member of the Committee.  The March financials were reviewed.  Our budget is on track, considering the anticipated ebb and flow of construction payments throughout the building project. The committee is expected to give the Advisory Board a recommendation on the ball field lighting project in June once the bids process concludes and the Bosco results are finalized.  The school, along with St. Benedict’s Parish, is in the process of moving the banking account to Arizona Business Bank  to save $$ on fees.
Development. The committee is discussing the development of a document to give to everyone at the beginning of the school year that would identify stewardship, development and fundraising projects which are offered at the school.   It would help families plan accordingly with their own family budgets.
Dads' Club. The Dads' Club is working on its second annual poker tournament on May 9th.  The Moms' and Dads' Club camping trip is scheduled for June 13-15. The Bosco event was deemed a success despite the economy.
PTO.  The PTO-sponsored New Family Orientation was held in April.  The teachers will be scooping gelato at Dolce Luna this week.  Plans are underway for Teacher Appreciation Week in early May.  The Family Movie Night is May 8th.  The pool party is May 21st at the Chandler Aquatic Center.  The PTO is in need of a Hospitality Chair for next year and will be advertising in the Bite.  The PTO will be sponsoring the back-to-school promotion with Easy School Supplies again.  Discussion is underway for a Mother-Son event.
Faculty Report.  A slew of field trips in various grades are underway as the school year winds down. Various grades are working on biography projects.  The 6th grade is creating a website based on the Roman Empire.  The 5th grade science brochures on the solar system will be posted on the website.  Cinco de Mayo celebration is in the planning stages for K-4 featuring food, music and folklorico dancing for 4th graders.  The Music Department’s spring recital program dates have been announced.
Technology.  More committee members are needed.  The committee is scheduling meetings in May to provide input on the strategic plan with regards to technology issues.  A standard maintenance schedule is being drafted.
Community  Issues.  Any changes in the awards and honors recognition have been tabled for now.  Questions for the student and parent surveys are due to President Klee by May 6th.   The Board would like to thank the individuals who have submitted applications to serve on the Board.  We are blessed to have so many wonderful parents who wish to share their time and talent.  An announcement on the selected individuals will be forthcoming.  The Board will also conduct officer elections in May.

The June meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 1st at 5:30 pm. Please contact President Chris Klee 10 days before the meeting to request an item be placed on the agenda.
SJB Advisory Board Members:  Chris Klee, President; Lynn Beck, Vice President; Kathy Boyle, Secretary; Eamonn Ahearne, Joyce Petrowski, Bruce Lincoln, Bill Mager,  Mike Rafford, Greg Hayes and Lynn Grennan.  Ex-officio Members: Father Gary Regula, Principal Shelley Conner, Faculty Representative Scott Brandt, and St. Benedict’s Parish Council Members Linda Korwald and Amy Fletcher.

Health Office Information

We are all watching closely as information on the Swine Flu headlines the news.  We don't want any one to panic, just be prepared.  Signs and symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, body aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It can last up to 10 days in children, and may be contagious for the whole duration of the illness. If your child is sick, please keep them home.  Avoid close contact with with people who are sick.  Reinforce good health habits...get plenty of sleep...drink plenty of fluids, especially water...eat nutritious foods.  Frequent hand washing and keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth will all help contain the virus.

Remind your students to bring a water bottle and wear sun screen daily.  With recess and PE, they are getting some sun exposure.  They can wear a hat outside also, but no sharing.

Please remember to pick up your students medication at the end of the school year.  We are required to throw away any medication not picked up by the end of the year.  Please return all clothing that has been lent to your students throughout the school year. We have several items that were never returned including belts and shoes.

Please notice that we have purchased an Automated External Defibrillator which is located in the MPR on the south wall.  Noticing where it is may help someone in an emergency.  The 8th grade class was instructed on continuous cardiac compression and how to help in an emergency this week.  Would you know what to do?

Congratulations Ms. Krakora!

Ms. Krakora was a First Place winner in the 2009 Got 2B Safe Contest and received a $500.00 Staples Gift Card.

The Got 2B Safe Contest required teachers to submit an essay of 250 words or less explaining how they have taught or can teach the following four safety tips and how then the children have used or can use these tips:

  1. Check First – Children should always check with parents and guardians before accepting gifts, rides or invitations from anyone, including friends, acquaintances and people they don’t know.
  2. Go With a Friend – Simple and straight forward – never go anywhere alone.  Being with another person in public is safer and more fun.
  3. It’s My Body – Teach your children they have the right to say NO to any unwelcome, uncomfortable, or confusing touch or actions by others.
  4. Tell a Trusted Adult – Teach your children to TELL a trusted adult – parent, teacher, etc. – if anyone or anything makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.

Ms. Krakora’s essay:

“I use song and dance to teach my kids about safety. We learn the “Be Safe Promise Poem”, which I wrote and created myself. As we learn the words, we act out the motions to make it come alive. After reading it once, then we have careful discussions about what each of the four safety tips are, why we need them, and how to use them.

After our discussion is over, we practice our Be Safe Promise Poem until it’s learned from memory. Then, anytime we have a few extra minutes throughout the year, we can get up and dance to remind us of our safety promise over and over again.”

Be Safe Promise Poem
Check with mom and dad (hold hand up to ear like a phone)
And don’t say yes to (shake head)
Anything that anyone (hold hands up in the air)
Says that it’s okay to do (nod head)
Stay with a friend (grab a friend’s hand)
Everywhere under the sun (raise arms above head like sunshine)
When you’re not alone (pout)
You will have more fun (smile)
My body is private (cross arms across chest)
I can and I will say no (nod yes, and then a BIG shake to say no)
If something feels uncomfortable (make a weird face)
I will let someone know (march in place)
If anything happens
I WILL TELL A TRUSTED ADULT (cup hands over mouth)
If anything seems wrong
I WILL TELL A TRUSTED ADULT (cup hands over mouth)

Sacramental Celebrants

Congratulations to the students of St. John Bosco who received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist last Saturday at St. Benedict.  We welcome you to the table of the Eucharist at our school Masses.  Also congratulations to the students who received the sacrament of Confirmation on that same day.  May the Holy Spirit guide you on your faith journey.  We look forward to being able to recognize the students from the other parishes in the next few weeks as they too celebrate these most precious sacraments.

Construction progress

DL Withers completed their third full week of construction.  The footing and foundation are in, as well as all the underground utilities.  Next week they will be pouring the slab and we will watch the wall go up.  Then we will have to wait a little until the steel for the roof supports arrive.  The construction is very much on schedule.

Textbooks

Over the past few weeks, Mrs. Conner has been stopping by the Jr High classrooms and has asked the students to re-cover any of the textbooks that have covers that are missing.  This past Wednesday, she promised a $5 charge for each uncovered book.  She even offered butcher paper for the office for those who needed it.   It is a simple task with tremendous benefit to the longevity of the textbooks.  Please keep the books covered.

Several Field Trips this past week.

In every case our children were commended for their interest, mature behavior and attention to the task at hand.  We are so proud of our students.

Just a Reminder...

End of the year statements will be mailed soon.  Please log your volunteer hours on Renweb and pay any fees that may be due (MAP, Big Johns, Library, etc.) FACTS agreement letters are due on Monday.  Thank you!

***WANTED***Ruthless Card-Playing Deputies***WANTED***

Sheriff Rosco “Pat Garret” is lookin’ to deputize willin’ gunslingers to capture “Billy the Kid” Sallurday and his gang at this year’s TEXAS HOLD’EM TOURNEY!!!
“The Kid” and eight of his compatriots took off with the SJB Corral coffers last year and we intend to hunt’em all down at the Hold’Em tables this May 9th (a Saturday).
Here’s the low-down: like last year’s shindig at the SJB Corral (MPR Room), Rosco will be hostin’ a Texas-sized Hold’Em Tournament and providin’ BlackJack and Left/Center/Right tables for the more timid citizens.  Saloon doors open at 5PM with socializin’ and eatin’ (from Someburros).  The Hold’Em Tourney starts at 6PM sharp!
Benefits from the evening are generously offered to the SJB Scholarship Fund in memory of Tom Dillon.  Tourney and table game prizes will be paid in Scrip.  So, be on the lookout for Tourney flyers, or look to Rosco’s henchmen for details: Mark Schmisseur (mark.a.schmisseur(at)intel.com) or Clay Thomas (clay_thomas(at)usa.net).
Note: chip bonus is again offered for signin’ up early (by 4/29)!
The skinny on capturing the gang: There’s a bounty placed on the heads of the gang, payable (in poker chips!) upon being the first to take their last chips during the tourney.  That bounty goes up the longer these yellow-belly hombres are runnin’ free at the tables, so stay tuned for our wanted list and the reward $$$ in next week’s update – we’re hopin’ to get some sketch artists together so you can put a face to those dastardly names!

SJB New-Kindergarten Construction Begins!

Construction begins Friday on our new Kindergarten classrooms and restrooms to be located behind the existing 1st and 2nd grade classroom building.  Work crews will first erect temporary construction fencing, and very quickly shovels will hit the ground and new classrooms will rise.  Our contractor, DLWithers,  has worked with many schools, and they understand the chaos of parking lots at drop off and pick up times.  They have vowed to notify each sub-contractor of our schedule so as to minimize disruptions.  Please be patient and notify the school if there is any kind of problem.
Once completed, Kindergarten will move into these new classrooms, Pre-K will move into the former Kindergarten classrooms, and Art will end its odyssey and return to its regular classroom!  As reported earlier this year, this project is being funded from the capital reserve, and is being done in a favorable construction industry environment.

Practice Your Leadership Skills and Be the First to Meet New Students!

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 is New Family Welcome for families that will be attending St. John Bosco in the fall.  We are in need of students to help out with childcare that evening.  The hours would be from 6:15 until approximately 8:30.  Only the first five students can serve.  Please email Laurie Pretzman if you are interested.

Stewardship at St. John Bosco

Since the beginning of the school year students have been involved in monthly service projects, designed to help educate students in the concept of Stewardship as well as to help students begin to form life-long relationships with service organizations in our community. The theme for February was “Closest to your Heart.”  Students in each class were able to choose a particular charity or organization that they wanted to support. They then brainstormed ideas on how they could best serve the organization, planned their events and activities and then went to work.  By the end of the month, students collected over $6700.00 in cash and goods for the charities closest to their hearts!

Mrs. Berry’s Pre-Kindergarten
class held a “Sock Drive” for St. Vincent de Paul.  They collected over 25 packages of socks to donate.

Students in Mrs. McCormick’s and Mrs. Prezkop’s Kindergarten classes along with Mrs. Larsen’s first grade class
spent the month doing extra chores at home to earn money to donate to Friends of the Orphans.  Combined, the students raised and donated $658.33.

Mrs. Perkins's first grade class held a bake sale and raised $284.08 for the Ronald McDonald House.

Miss Krakora’s second grade students adopted Paz de Cristo for the month.  They collected over 200 cans for food boxes.  After the collection, the class then went on a field trip to Paz de Cristo to see where their cans went and to learn how the food boxes were prepared.  Miss Usher’s second grade students collected over $250.00 in toys for Andrea’s Closet at Mercy Gilbert Hospital as well as wrote letters to the children who are hospitalized there.

Miss Ioakem’s third grade class held a bake sale and raised $389.00 for Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Mrs. Christopher’s third grade class collected $45.00 and wrote letters to the sick children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Mrs. Reichardt’s and Mrs. Neumann’s fourth grade students along with Mrs. Kennedy’s fifth grade students collected items for Maggies Place.  They were able to deliver two truck loads of diapers, wipes, paper towels and personal hygiene items to the center.

Students in Mrs. Hernandez’s and Mrs. Navarro's sixth grade class
held a bake sale and raised $329.00 for March of Dimes.

Jr. High students in Mrs. Byrnes, Mr. Byrnes, Miss Whalen and Mrs. Guthrie’s classes along with Mr. Brandt’s fifth grade students held a Math-A-Thon.  Students asked parents and friends to sponsor them for the number of math problems they could solve.  The students collected $1,100.00 for St. Jude’s Hospital.

The Special’s teachers and student clubs joined in the fun as well.
In Ms. Lapsys and Mr. B’s P.E. classes, students participated in Jump Rope for Heart and raised over $700.00 for the American Heart Association.  Mrs. Harvey held a Read-A-Thon.  Students read over 500 books and raised $552.00 to purchase books for the children at the Mesa Detention Center.  The CAP Club (Conserve and Preserve) sold “Go Green” t-shirts which can be worn on Spirit Day at school.  They were able to raise $480.00 which was donated to MASH, BARK, Arizona Animal Welfare League and Best Friends Animal Shelter. The Student Council collected art and craft supplies for children at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  They also held a car wash and purchased gift cards with the proceeds.

Battle of the Books

Congratulations! Team Five- has won the St. John Bosco Battle of the Books competition.  Kacee R., Madeleine R., and Kirsten C. will advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, April 28 at 11 A.M,.  The students worked hard and answered tough questions to advance to the next competition. Let’s give a Bulldog Bark for all of the battle teams who have been reading their way through challenging battles. We hope to see the fifth grade teams back again next year! Special thanks goes out to Kelly Rafford, Kim Dourney-Rodriguez, Jennifer Le, Julie Camp and Tracy Rychlyk for creating HUNDREDS of practice questions for the teams.

Summary of SJB Advisory Board Meeting, March 23, 2009

The Board received reports from the Principal, Pastor and Faculty Representative; Development, Finance, and Facilities committees; plus updates from the Moms' and Dads' Clubs, at its Mar. 23rd meeting.  The highlights follow.

Principal’s Report.  Principal Conner reported on the 8th grade high school placements.  She encouraged members to attend the Soup and Stations of the Cross on March 27th at the school.  Principal Conner explained the Diocese’s request to have all schools participate in the CDA campaign this year. A report is expected to be published in September in the Catholic Sun. Since the school already has a plan on stewardship (a particular charity/effort each month) and the effort made by our students and families, the Board directed Mrs. Conner to contact the CDA chairs and report on what our school has done already for the year.

Pastor’s Report and St. Benedict’s Parish Council Report. Life Teen is hosting a seder meal on Palm Sunday.  Registration is required.  Reconciliation is this Wednesday at St. Benedict’s at 7:00 pm.  Fr. Gary reported on other parishes’ reconciliation dates. The Parish Council is continuing to work on its strategic plan.  The parish staff served food at St. Vincent De Paul recently.  Fr. Gary hopes to continue the practice of closing the office for a day with staff volunteering their time at a local charity.  The parish is in need of liturgical ministers and a lector coordinator.  Holy Week schedule was announced. Bishop Olmstead is presiding over the Confirmation/First Communion service on April 18th.  A health care ministry is being formed. The parish luau is this Saturday.

Development.    The committee is continuing its efforts to identify and submit for grants, recruit more members to help with stewardship and endowments, plan for the Annual Giving and CTODP campaigns for next school year and researching a 10 year anniversary celebration for 2010-2011, employer matching programs and hardship fund.  The committee is developing a database of nonprofit organizations that students could access in order to complete service hours.  The next committee meeting is April 9th.

Facilities.  The Diocese has selected DL Withers Construction for the new kindergarten building. The City of Phoenix is reviewing the second submittal of plans – waiting on permit so we can move dirt.  The Board authorized the Facilities Committee to spend up to $1500 for permits with the City of Phoenix for the ball field lighting project.  The Piper grant projects (parking lot, roofing systems, etc.) would begin this summer.  The Eagle Scout projects by Matthew Rainey and Ryan Murphy are ongoing with significant progress made so far.

Financial.  The committee has reviewed the finances to date along with the budget.  No problems were reported to the Advisory Board.  The committee is recruiting for more members.

Dads' Club. The Dads' Club is working on its second annual poker tournament on May 9th.  The Moms' and Dads' Club camping trip is scheduled for June 13-15. The Bosco planning is underway.

PTO.  The PTO sponsored a summer activities fair during the March 4th K-4 Science Fair.  Katrina Zero is the speaker on March 24th.   The New Family Orientation is April 7th.  Family dinner night is April 30th at Chuck-E-Cheese.  May 1st is the family movie night.  The board was advised of the rising costs associated with the year-end school pool party and offered suggestions to the PTO to explore.

Faculty Report.  The Math Counts team won a trophy in their competition.  Spring sports continue.  The 7th graders and Mrs. Lynch are going to Arriba’s Mexican Restaurant this week for a Spanish lesson in ordering food. The Spanish Spelling Bee is this Thursday, March 26th.  The 5th graders are traveling to JABiztown on April 2nd to learn the art of running a city and local businesses using economic principles.  The 6th graders are planning a field trip to an aquarium at the end of April.  The school is receiving a donated ATV to use in dragging the infield for baseball.   For safety reasons, staff will be required to wear a helmet while riding the ATV.

Technology.  Mr. Regalado is continuing his efforts to clean smart board projectors and install new light bulbs.  The committee is discussing upgrading the software and server.

Community Issues.  The board spent time reviewing the final version of the board Constitution.  President Klee is working on the year-end school survey.
The April meeting is scheduled for Monday, Apr. 27th at 5:30 pm. Please contact President Chris Klee 10 days before the meeting to request an item be placed on the agenda.

SJB Advisory Board Members:  Chris Klee, President; Lynn Beck, Vice President; Kathy Boyle, Secretary; Eamonn Ahearne, Joyce Petrowski, Bruce Lincoln, Bill Mager,  Mike Rafford, Greg Hayes and Lynn Grennan.  Ex-officio Members: Father Gary Regula, Principal Shelley Conner, Faculty Representative Scott Brandt, and St. Benedict’s Parish Council Members Linda Korwald and Amy Fletcher.

Service to Life Event

As usual, God provided for all our needs for the Service to Life Event-- even with a last minute catering change and the associated challenge of funding the dinner. The 2nd Annual event was a wonderful success! With a quiet but steady flow of attendees, the service organizations felt that they made some great connections with our community. We are so thankful that we could host such a life affirming event. A special thanks to the Moms' and Dads' Club for sponsoring the event. We are also grateful to the many volunteers, donors, and those who worked behind the scenes: Lisa Campbell,  Maureen Sullivan, Myra Carlos, Dorothy Abril, Laurie Pretzman,  Mary Reese, Scott Fuhrmark, Harris Family, LaFave Family, Murphy Family, Yousif Family. 5th Annual Moms’ and Dads’ Club Family Camp Out

SJB families, don’t plan your summer vacation without first locking in June 13-15 for the 5th Annual SJB Moms' and Dads' Club Family Camp Out.  The date is now in June, but the location remains the same at the Whitetail Campground on Mt. Lemmon near Tucson.  This campground is probably the most modern in the state with a large, lighted pavilion with electric outlets, large charcoal grills, and excellent tent site platforms.  At 8,000 feet elevation, enjoy the cool, crisp mountain air.  Space is limited, so sign-up to reserve a spot for your family. Last year we had roughly 100 campers during the weekend.  No prior camping experience is necessary and there will be plenty of experienced campers on hand to help out any rookies. If you have any questions contact Mark Schmisseur.

50 Families Needed

We are in need of 50 families to serve as family mentors to the newest members of the St. John Bosco community.  Starting a new school can sometimes be overwhelming for both the new student and the family.  As a mentor, you can help make the transition an easy one by providing information, tips, and by being a friendly and welcome face in a sea of strangers.  Click here to register.

2009/2010 Tuition Rates Finalized

The Advisory Board has approved a 2% tuition increase for the 2009-2010 school year.  The new annual tuition rates will be $4,490 for Catholics and $6,220 for Non-Catholics (as compared to $4,400 and $6,100 this year).
Recognizing the difficult economic circumstances facing our community, the Finance Committee and the Advisory Board carefully reviewed all options to minimize next year's increase.  Major factors in setting the new tuition rates include best estimates of upcoming enrollment, a careful review of spending, facility maintenance costs we face as our school ages, rising health care costs and a Diocesan-mandated salary scale.  The Board feels this increase is necessary to ensure that we can meet all of our anticipated costs in the coming year and avoid compromising our long-term financial health. The school continues to explore ways of reducing current and future expenses while maintaining our ongoing mission of excellence in Catholic education.

Summary of SJB Advisory Board Meeting, February 23, 2009

The Board received reports from the Principal, Pastor and Faculty Representative; Development, Finance, and Facilities committees; plus updates from the Moms' and Dads' Clubs, at its Feb. 23rd meeting.  The highlights follow.
The board welcomes Greg Hayes as a new member of the board.  Greg has graciously offered to serve on the Technology Committee and lend his IT experience to the school.

Principal’s Report.  Principal Conner reported the administration is tracking 8th grade high school placements.  Board members were encouraged to attend the Diocesan School board meeting at SJB on Feb. 24th.  Coordination of an end-of-the-year survey is underway as part of the strategic plan.  Principal Conner reported the inventory has been completed by the teachers and Mr. Regalado on the use of technology in the curriculum for grades 6-7-8, based on last month’s board discussion with community input.  More information is to come to the board on identifying any gaps along with professional development for teachers. The board was provided a list of professional development programs in the area of technology that teachers have attended in the past two years. The board reviewed current enrollment figures and the latest figures on re-enrollment for next school year.

Pastor’s Report. Lenten season was fast approaching.  Fr. Gary reported on electrical work being done at the parish and the continued efforts by the Parish Council on a strategic plan.  He also reported on the recent layoffs at the Diocesan office.

Development.     The committee was continuing its efforts to identify and submit for grants, recruit more members to help with stewardship and endowments, plan for the Annual Giving and CTODP campaigns for next school year; and researching a 10 year anniversary celebration for 2010-2011, employer matching programs and hardship fund.

Facilities.  The Pre-K building project was on track for solicitation of bids, selection of contractor, and granting of building permits with the expectation to “move” dirt in April. The ball field lighting project was ongoing with resubmission of information to the City of Phoenix and a second bid from Qualite for financial purposes only.  The Piper grant projects (parking lot, roofing systems, etc.) would begin this summer.  The Eagle Scout projects by Matthew Rainey and Ryan Murphy were ongoing. A thank you will be sent to the Chicago White Sox organization for their assistance in getting the baseball field ready for play.

Financial.  The advisory board approved the Finance Committee’s recommendation to increase tuition for FY 09-10 by 2% for all students, Catholic and non-Catholic.  The tuition amount will be $4490 for Catholic and $6220 for non-Catholic students.  A separate e-mail notice would be sent to all families from Principal Conner.  The committee was in need of more members (contact Lynn Beck, if interested).
Moms' and Dads' Club. The next Moms' Club event was the Bunco Social/Night of Chocolate on Tuesday, Feb. 24th in the MPR.  The Dads' Club was working on its second annual poker tournament on May 9th.  The Bosco planning was underway.

PTO.  The PTO was sponsoring a summer activities fair during the March 4th K-4 Science Fair, a speaker on March 24th, family movie night on May 1st and school pool party in late May (location to be determined).

Faculty Report.  The 4th grade is to continue the tradition of the overnight zoo trip in March.  Science Fair for K-4 is scheduled for March 4th.  Power point presentations in class by 5th graders are underway for Social Studies.  The 8th graders are working on the SCAMP project (Story about a Cultural Artifact from a Mathematical Perspective) this month and then class presentations. The Spanish spelling bee is scheduled for March 26th.  The 7th graders are going to Arriba’s restaurant on March 25th to use their Spanish speaking skills to order food.

Community Issues.  The board spent time amending the bylaws and reviewing the final version of the board Constitution.
The March meeting is scheduled for Monday, Mar. 23rd at 5:30 pm. Please contact President Chris Klee 10 days before the meeting to request an item be placed on the agenda.

SJB Advisory Board Members:  Chris Klee, President; Lynn Beck, Vice President; Kathy Boyle, Secretary; Eamonn Ahearne, Joyce Petrowski, Bruce Lincoln, Bill Mager,  Mike Rafford, Greg Hayes and Lynn Grennan.  Ex-officio Members: Father Gary Regula, Principal Shelley Conner, Faculty Representative Scott Brandt and St. Benedict’s Parish Council Members Linda Korwald and Amy Fletcher.

Field Day is Coming

The day the children look forward to all year is finally here. No, it's not the last day of school, it is FIELD DAY.Read closely because the dates for all grades are not the same.4-8 will be on Tuesday March 3 8:30-11:30K-3 will be on Thursday March 5 8:30-11amThe games will include a variety of track and field events, throwing for distance and accuracy, some games are silly, and all of them are fun.

NEEDS: We need Volunteers for both days. We need at least 10 parents to help chaperone the games, 5 at water stations, 1-2 on first aid. The nurse will be on campus but some of the scrapes and bumps can be handled with TLC.

Materials for energy and hydration:
Sugar-free Popsicles
Water
Fruit

We have several 5 gallon containers and a few chests, we could use several cases of water, ice and cups. Ideally, your child will bring in their own water bottle with their NAME on it and we can refill it as needed. It helps cut down on the waste: our environment thanks you.
The last 2 years we have given the students a sugar free popsicle and fruit at the end of field day. The fruit has been a gigantic hit and an excellent snack after all their hard work. We have received many trays and bowls of grapes, watermelon, and orange slices, and not a morsel has been left over. So, if you are feeling ambitious we could certainly use some fruit. If shopping is your thing, popsicles, ice, or water would be very appreciated.

DRESS:PE uniforms, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.Thank you all for everything you do all year to help make all the things we do for our students a success. We couldn't do it without you. Please email Mr. B if you can do anything to help!

the permission of Mr. Buchanan to drag the infield in preparation for games. Contact Gregg Buchanan with any questions.

And if you have any Tyson labels, please turn those in as well. Tyson gives us the most money per label - so this is a great way for us to bring in some extra $$$$$. Thanks!

Recycle for St. John Bosco

Saint John Bosco is collecting empty printer cartridges and used cell phones as an ongoing fundraiser. The drop-off point is in the MPR next to the Chapel doors.
Through the Funding Factory Recycling Program, we can earn new technology, classroom tools, playground equipment and more just by recycling printer cartridges and cell phones. All of the rewards earned through this program are earned by the school without the hassle of sending the students door to door selling candy, candles, wrapping paper and more.
Our school has already earned much needed PE equipment through recycling!
We realize that many office supply stores and other businesses are giving a discount or coupon in exchange for the cartridges and cell phones. Please consider sending your used cartridges and cell phones to the school instead of using them to receive this discount. The rewards for the school are very much appreciated.
Again, we encourage you to save the cartridges from your home printer and send those along with your used cell phones to the school with your child. If you work for a business that is using laser or inkjet printer cartridges or cell phones, please inquire as to what is done with those items once they are used.
Our school would love to have your employer as a business supporter. FundingFactory offers FREE prepaid shipping labels to all businesses that collect cartridges and cell phones on our behalf.
To find out more about our cartridge and cell phone collection, please contact Janet Roberts at planet-j@cox.net.
Saint John Bosco greatly appreciates your support of this program.

Thank You

Student Council was very busy during Catholic Schools Week. On Tuesday they hosted a new type of day for the students and the day received good reports from the students. Additionally, Student Council provided a wonderful lunch for the staff this week.
This was a very thoughtful gift to the entire staff.  We certainly appreciate all that you do for the students, staff and community. With sincere gratitude...SJB Faculty and Staff.

The Bosco Golf, Dinner, Auction - Save the Date!

The Bosco Goodie Bags – Goodies Needed!

The Bosco Golf Tournament (April 25, 2009) once again needs donations for the Goodie Bags that we provide as gifts to our 250 golfers and volunteers.  We are in need of items that might include, but are not limited to: bags for the goodies, golfer’s tools (balls and tees, ball markers, divot repairs, bottle openers, can coozies, towels, pens), snacks (granola bars, fruit, drinks), personal care (sunscreen, lip balm, eyeglass cloths, hats, visors, first-aid kits), water bottles, t-shirts, etc.  If you or your company would like to donate these or other promotional items, please contact Peter Grossgold at sjbdad@cox.net or 602-810-5555.  If you would like to gain visibility and exposure for your company, but need a creative marketing solution or a source for promotional items, Peter can assist with that, too.

Thank you Target and Congratulations Mrs. Whalen!

Mrs. Whalen and St. John Bosco were recipients of a Target Field Trip Grant.  The $800.00 grant will be used for the 8th Grade MARS field trip.  This field trip will give the students a chance to work side by side with NASA-MARS scientists at the MARS research facility at ASU.  It is an incredible program where the students can see Science in real life action.  This is a three day program with the end result being a presentation to the scientists that will ask the students questions and evaluate their work.  Students who are participating had to fill out an application, get recommendations from another Jr. High teacher to participate as well as write an essay on why they wanted to be part of the MARS program.

Lady Bulldogs Need You!

The 7th Grade girls are in need of a basketball coach. These girls are ready to go and are a lot of fun.   Please contact Ms. Lapsys at slapsys@sjbosco.org.

MORE WAYS TO EARN FREE $$$$$ FOR SJB - YAY!!!

I wanted to tell you about a new opportunity to help SJB get some money, and remind you of the current ways as well.

Fresh & Easy - collect your receipts and turn them in to the school. I will collect them. For every $20, Fresh & Easy will donate $1 to our school! However, you cannot combine receipts to get to $20. For example, a recipet for $18.95 would not get us any money. A receipt for $29.95 would get us $1, and a receipt for $41.20 would get us $2. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Tyson - Please keep turning these labels in as well. We don't promote this as heavily as the other programs, but we get .24 for each Tyson label! Please note you have to clip the entire "1,2,3 A+" label - not just the "A+" in order for us to get money.

For the Box Tops & Campbell's labels, we are sending home collection sheets. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO. However, for some it might be easier. Simply cut and glue your pink Box Top or your Campbell's UPC code to the appropriate sheet and send in with your student (Note: this obviously won't work for Campbell's lids). If it's easier for you to toss the box tops & labels in a bag and have us sort and cut, that's fine too. Some parents were asking for collection sheets. We will still cut, though, so don't worry!!! Also, one more gentle reminder that we need the UPC labels and lids from appropriate Campbell's labels. Front labels are not accepted anymore. If you have questions, you can visit www.boxtops4education.com or www.labels4education.com for products that are included in these programs. Thanks! Mary Parra: parrajm@aol.com

Construction Projects at SJB

The school is finalizing plans for some significant construction projects, including the addition of new Kindergarten classrooms, paving the rear parking lot, and adding lights and another baseball field to the athletic fields.  As reported last fall, these projects are being funded from the Building Fund, fundraising with The Bosco, and from a diocesan-wide grant from the Virginia G. Piper Foundation.  The New-K classrooms (which will give Pre-K and Art a permanent home!) have been approved by the Diocese, and will be constructed behind the existing 1st grade classrooms.  The New-K construction drawings are now being reviewed by the City of Phoenix, and we expect to receive bids and start construction in the March timeframe.  Construction drawings for the athletic field additions and for the parking lot are being generated, and we anticipate construction of these projects over the summer break.  Questions?  Contact Bill Mager, Facilities Committee Chair, at magersul@cox.net

Lexus Eco Challenge

A team of five SJB 8th grade students including Marco De Leon, Courtney Cox, Hailee Roberge, Emily Schur, and Nathan Long are participating in the second annual Lexus Eco Challenge. This is a program designed by Lexus and Scholastic to educate and empower students to take action to improve the environment. Due to the fact that cars cause a significant amount of air pollution, this team decided to make a difference by promoting alternative forms of transportation. They are collecting pledges to reduce the number of total miles driven by our school and church community each month and will be presenting their findings at local colleges, meetings and conferences. They would really appreciate if you would take a minute and look at their website at www.sjbgreenteam.wordpress.com where you can learn more about their project and make a pledge as well. Their goal is to collect at least 500 pledges.

Look What is Going on in Mrs. Ioakem's Class

Ms. Ioakem's third grade students presented their persuasive speeches to Mrs. Conner this week.  Gabi presented her argument for a Movie theater. Her presentation was clear and focused with good details.  Beca made some great suggestions for additions to the lunch menus.  Tanner argued for a pool for the school, as it will help keep the students cool and hydrated!  Eric did some great research and had included a significant number of facts in his presentation.  Madison promised to do chores every afternoon if we were willing to change the schedule to 1 p.m. release every day.  Tim proposed we keep new grass on the playground and Miles wants the President to allow little cars for everyone.  All the students in the class did a superb job brainstorming, writing, and editing.  They presented with confident strong voices and good eye contact. Congratulations to our students, they can be proud of a job well done!

No one can accuse the Ahwatukee Catholic children of not doing their part in the fight against global hunger.
Children from Corpus Christi Catholic Church and St. John Bosco Interparish School in Ahwatukee collected more than $7,000 in quarters for the hunger-relief organization, Feed My Starving Children.
Now the church is trying to engage adults as well. Corpus Christi is staging a "food packaging event" Friday and Saturday to benefit the Minnesota-based nonprofit. <read story>

Tuition 2009-2010

The finance committee is in the process of finalizing the budget for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year.  We are looking at each and every item in the budget to ensure that we are making the most of our revenue and keeping our expenses to the lowest level possible.  With this being said, we realize that the community at large needs to have an idea of what tuition will be next year.  After review, it is the finance committee's recommendation to the advisory board that tuition will not be increased greater than 2 ½% for the upcoming year.

Summary of SJB Advisory Board Meeting, January 26, 2009

The Board received reports from the Principal, Pastor and Faculty Representative, Development, Finance, and Facilities committees, plus updates from the Mom’s and Dad’s Clubs, at its January 26th meeting.  The highlights follow.

Principal’s Report. The recent student alumni meeting revealed areas that SJB was doing well and where improvements were needed.  Overall, the students felt prepared for high school with students commenting, “You told us, but we didn’t believe you.”  The administration has been directed to take the feedback from the alumni and to incorporate the suggestions for future years.  We do plan on having the alumni return each year for a focus group type event.  Enrollment stands at 568.

Pastor’s Report. Plans were underway for the Lenten season and work was continuing on the parish’s strategic plan by the Parish Council.

Development. The Annual Giving campaign goal was met (goal - $54,000; received - $55,200).  CTODP funds totaled $275,800. Discussion occurred on the status of the magazine drive and was there a better way to raise funds.  The Advisory Board provided comments and directed the Development Committee to further explore the issue.  Updates were provided on pending grants.  The committee needed more volunteers.

Facilities.  The Diocese had given approval on the ball field and Pre-K construction projects.  The drawings for the Pre-K building were at the City of Phoenix for review. Once the drawings were finalized, bids to contractors could be initiated.  We hoped to “move dirt” around late March. The ball field lighting project was proceeding with a desire to have it started by late February. The Piper grant projects (parking lot and roofing systems) would begin in the summer.  A big thank you is extended to AZ Treeworks (Marchello Family) for completing all tree pruning on campus.

Financial.  The Board discussed a preliminary budget for FY 09-10 including tuition for the next year.  More information to come.

Mom’s and Dad’s Club. Preliminary results were given on the Winter Wonderland event by the Mom’s Club.  The Dad’s Club sponsored Trivia Night was a huge success.  Plans were underway for the Feb. 20th 2nd annual Father-Daughter Dance and for the Bosco, April 25th.

PTO.  Nan Marchello was now President for the remaining school year, Stacey Lykins was serving as Treasurer (2 yr. commitment) and a volunteer was needed to serve as Vice President.

Faculty Report.  The schedule for National Catholic Schools Week was highlighted including the first annual Activities Day hosted by the Student Council.  The sports program was in need of a 5th grade baseball coach.  The Student Council was reviewing the proposed awards rubric for input.  For future Open Houses, the teachers preferred to be in their classrooms to highlight curriculum and use of Smart Boards.

Community Issues:  Parent input was presented regarding the adequacy of our math challenges to advanced upper grade students as well as concerns over the use and teaching of technology in the classroom.  Discussion ensued regarding the positive impact of our Accelerated Math Program, ITBS scores and use of an individual approach with teachers to create and promote academic advancement and challenges.
