Golf Notes, Quotes, History, and Information for 6th/7th Quiz
There are many facets to golf, the history of the game and the growth of the sport. Golf originated in the European countries. The British Open is still one of the Four major championships played within the calendar year. The other three Major championships are the Masters, US Open and the PGA Chamionship. There are many different types of tours affiliated with the game of golf. Those include the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, Nike Tour, European tour and recently added the Asian Tour.
The Masters (played in Augusta, GA) is the most recently played tour event won by Phil Mickelson. Mr. Mickelson also played collegiately at ASU. This years win was his third Masters. The individual with the most Masters wins and most Major tournament wins is Jack NIcklaus. (6 Masters and 18 Majors and played at Ohio State University) Following directly behind Mr. Nicklaus' Major tour wins happens to be Tiger Woods with 14 Majors won. Tiger played collegiately at Stanford University and won the US Amateur Chamionship twice before turning pro.
Phoenix hosts a PGA Golf tournament in the month of January. It is usually the third stop on the PGA Tour and is played at the TPC course in Scottsdale, AZ. This years event was sponsored by Waste Management and they raised over $5mm for charities.
The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) is the version of professional womens golf. Ladies are required to complete qualifying school (same as the the men) before joining the tour. There are some individuals that complete the requirement without going to or playing college golf. The University of Arizona has had two representatives Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa played for the Wildcats while being ranked #1 on the LPGA. Arizona State has also had several outstanding players such as Heather Farr, Anna Nordqvorst, and Danielle & Dina Ammacapane. Girls high School golf is outstanding. Xavier College Prep in Phoenix has won 27 straight state championships and two National Championships.
St. John Bosco annually hosts their own golf tournament "The Bosco" (named after the school) every Spring as a fund (Fun) raiser for the community. The tournament raises funds which provide the school with Smart Boards, technology equipment, and school improvements. This years tourney will be held at the Ocotillo Golf Spa and Resort in Chandler, AZ.
Equipment
Golf equipment has changed drastically throughout the years. From earliest days when clubs were made/designed with wooden shafts, club heads and putters to the more sophisticated products of graphite shafts and squared grooved irons. Several manufacturers are competitive with the makeshift of golf products. Some of these include PING (located in Phoenix, AZ), Wilson, Callaway, Taylor Made, Nike, Top Flight, and Titlest.
Three main parts of a golf club include: Grip, shaft, face. Most golf bags are divided into three main sections: Woods (1, 3, 5) Irons (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, pitching wedge) and a putter. Pending the size and face of the club, makes the degree of loft on all irons. For example a 2 iron will have a smaller face (hitting space & Degree of loft) than an 8 Iron.
