Prayer for the End of the School Year:

O God of all beginnings and endings,
We praise and thank you for the gift of this school year.
It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,
With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.

The days have passed quickly, O Lord.
The weeks, the months, the seasons, the holidays and holy days,
The exams, vacations, breaks, and assemblies,
All have come forth from your hand.

While we trust that your purposes have always been at work each day,
Sometimes it has seemed difficult to understand and appreciate
Just what you have been up to in our school.

Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer.
Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.
Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,
And bless us, according to your will,

With the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams.
Watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead,
And guide each day as you have done this past year.
Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new energy.

May we continue to grow
In age, wisdom, knowledge and grace
All the days of our lives.

Amen!

Dear Mom & Dad,

I had a great last week of 2nd grade!  We had so much fun at our party on Thursday.  Thank you to all the moms who made it so special for us.  Did you see my awards and poems from Mrs. Lacsa and Miss Usher?

In Religion we read scripture stories and talked about the sacraments we will be receiving in 3rd grade.  We reviewed all of our prayers that we learned this year.

Miss Usher finished reading The Tale of Despereaux and we watched the movie in class.  We did a compare and contrast activity between the book and the movie.  On the last day of school we read Oh The Places You'll Go and related the story to our year together!  We wrote letters to the first graders and also received letters from the 3rd graders telling us what we should expect for next year.  Don't forget to check out my "Young Authors" book that has all of my writing from 2nd grade.  Enjoy reading it!

In Math we took our last test over regrouping in addition and subtraction.  I also had an end of the year test to review all I learned this year.  The 3rd graders told us to practice math facts over the summer ~ especially multiplication!

In Social Studies I learned about Memorial Day, our National Holiday that is coming up on Monday.  I also experienced 4th grade's awesome Night at the Museum, learning about people from the past and their contributions to society.

In Science we finished studying the life cycle of a beetle!

Thank you for reading about my last week of 2nd grade...Happy Summer Vacation :)!

Love,

Your 2nd Grader

5/17/10~5/21/10:

May you have a blessed Pentecost Sunday and be reminded of the gifts of the Holy Spirit!

A Reading from The Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-11)

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we concluded our unit on Growing in Love.  We reviewed all of the concepts we learned about friendship, safety, making good choices, responsibility, loving others and how to take care of ourselves.  We also learned aboutPentecost because this Sunday is Pentecost Sunday!  Miss Usher told me not to forget to wear RED to mass this weekend.  I learned about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how those gifts helped the Apostles to spread the good news of Jesus.

Reading time was spent wrapping up the Talent Show theme.  I reviewed all of the stories and learned how to compare and contrast characters and events.  I even wrote a compare and contrast paragraph to relate things that I like to do or not do with things the characters did in each story.  Our reading tests for the end of the year are complete and Mrs. Duvall was impressed with the growth that we all made!  Miss Usher started reading The Tale of Despereaux to the class and next week we will watch the movie!  We’ve been practicing how to create a movie in our mind while listening and making predictions of what will happen next in the story.  We also talked about what to do if we come across an unfamiliar word while we are reading.

English was spent with multiple meaning words ~ I need a lot of review with this!  I learned how one word might have two meanings.  What I need practice with is how to use those words in a sentence to show what the word means.  I also did a few word sorts and learned about how to write directions.  I played a BINGO game with context clues and prefixes & suffixes, too.

In Math we are finishing up our last chapter on three digit addition and subtraction.  I will have a test next Tuesday and then start doing some addition and subtraction fact practice with timed tests and strategy help before the year is over.  Make sure I practice my math facts over the summer!

In Social Studies I created a timeline of our year in second grade, noting important events.  I also saw other examples of timelines.  I made a human timeline with the class and we learned how to sequence events of our timeline.

In Science we used part of the scientific process to make predictions and observations through watching our beetles!  I have been writing down great scientist notes about a beetle’s lifecycle and how each stage happens differently.  We’ve had a lot of fun observing!

The Ascension of the Lord

Luke 24:46-53

Jesus said to his disciples:

“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer

and rise from the dead on the third day

and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,

would be preached in his name

to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

You are witnesses of these things.

And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;

but stay in the city

until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Then he led them out as far as Bethany,

raised his hands, and blessed them.

As he blessed them he parted from them

and was taken up to heaven.

They did him homage

and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

and they were continually in the temple praising God.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we learned about The Ascension of the Lord.  We also continued our “Growing in Love” lessons.  We discussed responsibilities, communities we belong to, and how every choice has a consequence.

In Reading we read the last story of our Talent Show theme.  It was called The School Mural.  I practiced the reading skill of comparing and contrasting through the use of a Venn diagram.  Miss Usher had us write down any unfamiliar words from any books we were reading.  We reviewed those words together and talked about reading strategies.

In English I learned the phonics rule for dropping the final e in words like riding and making.  We did a few word sorts to help us with this skill.  We went through the writing process as we wrote about the top 3 reasons we’re excited for summer.

In Math we started regrouping in subtraction with three digit numbers.  I am doing great with this skill!  Make sure I am still practicing my math facts at home!

In Social Studies this week we talked about the order of events in time through creating a timeline about our lives.  Next week we will be creating a second grade timeline.

We had Science buddies with our 7th graders this week.  They shared with us the different body systems.  Ms. Whalen also gave us some beetles to examine life cycles for the rest of the school year.

Thank you for reading about my week!  Dad ~ Don't forget about the Father's Day breakfast on Monday morning :).

A Prayer for our Mothers...Happy Mother's Day!!!

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless our moms, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. AMEN!

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we began our “Growing in Love” lessons.  Please check your e-mail for specifics from Miss Usher on everything that we talked about in class.  We also received a letter from Scott, our seminarian!

In Reading I read a story called Moses Goes to a Concert.  This story had sign language, which we practiced in class.  I also learned how to write a summary for this story.  Gates testing scores are ready!  Please let Miss Usher know if you would like to see them.

English time was spent learning about multiple meaning words and the “long i vowel” pattern spelling words.  We also started choosing more words that we use in our writing to practice spelling.  I worked on paragraph writing, too!

In Math we started Chapter 12: Adding and Subtracting 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping.  Please check my Friday folder to see how I’m doing with this concept.  We only covered three-digit addition this week.  Next week we will start subtraction.  Make sure I’m practicing those math facts at home!

In Social Studies we learned about trade and how trade helps people get what they need to live.  We identified some places around the world that use trade and barter.  I read an article about trade in a specific family.

Ms. Whalen came in to our classroom and did a Science activity with us about graphing using fruity pebbles!  We also did an experiment with sound

4/26/10~4/30/10:

Sunday's Gospel Reading:

When Judas had left them, Jesus said,

“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

If God is glorified in him,

God will also glorify him in himself,

and God will glorify him at once.

My children, I will be with you only a little while longer.

I give you a new commandment: love one another.

As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.

This is how all will know that you are my disciples,

if you have love for one another.” -John 13: 31-35

Dear Lord, Help us to love one another as you have loved us.  Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week we spent time reviewing Unit 7 and took a test on Thursday.  My classmates and I did great!  I reviewed concepts about heaven, the Eucharist, and missionaries.

In Reading I read a story called The Art Lesson.  I spent time reading the biography of the author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola.  We did a crossword activity with his biography.  I wrote about my special talents since we are now in the Talent Show theme of our reading textbook.  This was perfect as the Talent Show at SJB happened on Thursday!

English time was spent with the writing process.  I also reviewed concepts of vowel sounds and irregular verbs.

In Math I reviewed concepts dealing with the hundreds, tens, and ones place value.  I compared numbers using the <, >, or = symbols and wrote numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest.  I took a test on Friday and did great!

In Social Studies I learned about where I live on the earth in relation to other places.  We reviewed the different continents and oceans as we studied maps and globes.

In Science Miss Usher read us two different books about the Earth and the Moon.  We learned what the earth is made of and how the earth’s tilt and rotation around the sun affect our four seasons of the year.  I learned the five different types of climate, too.

Thank you for reading about my week!

Sunday's Gospel Reading:

John 10: 27-30

Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice;
I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.
No one can take them out of my hand.
My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,
and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand.
The Father and I are one.”

Dear Lord, help us to follow you and never stray from your presence.  Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week we discussed the church’s mission and the work of missionaries around the world.  I continued to identify ways that I see Jesus in others, as this is our focus for the Easter season.  We have been practicing the Apostles’ Creed and discussing what it means.  Please review this with me at home.

In Reading I read a chapter book called The Cool Crazy Crickets and worked on a story map for each chapter.  I identified the setting and important events in each chapter.

English this week was focused on homophones ~ words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings.  We read a book containing homophone pairs and practiced using these in our writing.  Miss Usher also did a mini-lesson about using quotation marks in our writing to show dialogue.

In Math we finished our chapter on telling time and started with place value.  We have been identifying and writing numbers through 1,000.  Please review this concept with me at home.

In Social Studies we continued our discussion on jobs and the leading industries in different states.  We read an article about someone who worked 50 different jobs in the 50 different states.

Since it was Earth Week, Science was spent talking about the Earth and God’s creation.  We spent a lot of time outside observing the world around us.  We took a nature walk with our journals and even read stories outside.  I learned ways that I can help the environment, too.  We had Science buddies with our 7th grade friends and they helped us to a special activity on Earth Day.

Thank you for reading about my week!

4/12/10~4/16/10:

Happy Easter!  May God Bless your Easter season and may it be full of joy!

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.

So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
and we don't know where they put him."

So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.  They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.

When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.

Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.  For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

John 20:1-9

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion class we talked about the Easter season and what Easter truly means.  We began Chapter 19 in our textbooks.  This chapter is all about The Blessed Sacrament.  I am also being asked to look for ways that Jesus is present through people around me.  We will be writing down ways that we encounter Jesus.

Reading time was spent with three stories from our textbook: A Curve in the River, Slippery Siblings, and a chapter book called The Cool Crazy Crickets.  April is also POETRY month so we are reading a poem a day in class.  Please remind me to bring in my favorite poem to share!

In English we reviewed different spelling patterns and did small group word studies.  I also finished writing my story from before spring break.  I included all of the elements that I learned: setting, characters, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.  I also created a cinquain poem in class, as April is Poetry month!

In Math we finished our chapter on Measurement and did wonderful!  I began learning about telling time using a digital and analog clock.  Our second grade standard for telling time says to learn time to the nearest minute so we will be working on that in class a lot!  We each have our own “hands on” clock to use.  I will have a test next Wednesday over time concepts.

In Social Studies I got to share what I learned about my mom or dad’s job.  I took my interview worksheet and talked to several classmates about jobs.  I learned about some key vocabulary words like good, service and income.  We tied this into religion by discussing some jobs that God might call us to do.

Science time was spent exploring different types of clouds.  The three types of clouds we are required to learn about are: cumulus, stratus and cirrus.  Please help me look for a picture of each this weekend.  We will be creating a cloud book!  Next Thursday, April 22 is EARTH DAY.  We will be discussing ways to help keep God’s creation beautiful.

I really enjoyed my field trip to Celebrity Theatre for the Max & Ruby play.  When we returned from the field trip we discussed our favorite parts of the play and similarities and differences from the TV show.  The class also voted on our favorite field trip this year and it was…Army Ants & Flying Frogs!

Thank you for reading about my week!

Love,

Your 2nd Grader

May the Lord bless you as we enter into the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday)...

Lord, help us to remember the suffering you went through and help us to embrace our own crosses everyday.  As Easter approaches, we remember that there is life after death and that light conquers all darkness.

Loving God, I am just beginning to realize how much you love me. Your son, Jesus was humble and obedient. He fulfilled your will for him by becoming human and suffering with us. I ask you for the desire to become more humble so that my own life might also bear witness to you. I want to use the small sufferings I have in this world to give you glory.

Please, Lord, guide my mind with your truth.
Strengthen my life by the example of Jesus.
Help me to be with Jesus in this week
as he demonstrates again his total love for me.
He died so that I would no longer be separated from you.
Help me to feel how close you are and to live in union with you.  Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

Religion this week was focused on learning about Holy Week.  I prayed the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary with my class, attended the Passion play presented by 4th grade, went to Adoration and participated in Stations of the Cross.

In Reading we completed the Grand Canyon reader awards.  We voted on our favorite book.  Miss Usher read us a book called My Map Book.  It contained several different types of maps.  One of which was a map of the person’s heart containing things that are important to them like different people, places and things.  I created a map of my heart and we will be using this next week for a writing activity.

English time was spent with writing.  We also filled our own spelling list and this will help us continue to move from invented to conventional spelling.  Mrs. Duvall did a creative writing exercise with us describing the different elements our story should have.  We also talked about how to use transitional words and phrases in our writing such as next, then, last, so, but, while and after.

In Math we continued with our measurement chapter.  We learned how to measure things using inches, feet, centimeters and meters.  I also learned how to measure the perimeter of a shape.  We also talked about measuring weight of objects.  Then, using a hands on activity, we learned the conversions with cups, pints and quarts.

Social Studies time this week was spent creating a “My America” poster.  The students did great with this!  When we return from break we will begin our unit on Economics.  Please make sure I return the interview sheet when we get back from break, as this will help us to describe jobs that provide goods and services for our community.

In Science this week I learned about states of matter and how matter can appear as a solid, liquid or gas.  We used the example of water and watched a couple of videos to help us understand this concept.

Thank you for reading about my week!

3/22/10~3/26/10:

Learning Christ
Teach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle
In all the events of life-
  in disappointments,
  in the thoughtlessness of others,
in the insincerity of those I trusted,
in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.

Let me put myself aside,
to think of the happiness of others,
to hide my little pains and heartaches,
so that I may be the only one to suffer from them.

Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path.
Let me so use it that is may mellow me, not harden nor embitter me;
That it may make me patient, not irritable. That is may make me broad in
My forgiveness, not narrow, haughty and overbearing.

May no one be less good for having come within my influence. No one less pure,
Less true, less kind, less noble for having been a fellow-traveler in our journey
Toward ETERNAL LIFE.

As I go my rounds from one distraction to another, let me whisper from time to time, A word of love to Thee. May my life be lived in the super-natural, full of power for Good, and strong in its purpose of sanctity. Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

Religion time this week was spent reviewing Unit 6, which talked about the parts of the mass.  I worked with a partner to complete the chapter review and we took a test on Thursday.  We also received a letter from Scott the Seminarian!  We wrote friendly letters back to him telling him all about our Lent.

In Reading we read a story called Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco.  Miss Usher showed us others books written by this author.  I made a one pager to show my learning from the story and practiced sequencing (putting important events from the story in order).

In English we studied word patterns.  I learned when & why consonants are doubled when ending in –ed or –ing. I also practiced friendly letter writing.

In Math we wrapped up our chapter on multiplication and division.  We all did great and everyone passed with flying colors!  We began our chapter on Measurement.

Social Studies time was spent talking about our nation’s government.  I learned the three branches of government and how they work together.  Next week I will make a poster with pictures that show American symbols and how to be a good citizen.

In Science we talked about weather.  This connected well with our story Thunder Cake, as it helped us to discuss storms and how to stay safe during the monsoon season!

Don’t forget to ask me all about the Childsplay I attended this week called Tomato Plant Girl.  We had a great class discussion following the play about friendships and bullying.   We also had a great time at field day on Thursday afternoon!  Next week is Holy Week and we have some very special activities that we will be participating in.

Thank you for reading about my week!

In the theme of St. Patrick's Day...

The Prayer of St. Patrick
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.

Christ shield me today
Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through the mighty strength
Of the Lord of creation
Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we learned about the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  We continued talking about sacrifices we are making for Lent and are reminded everyday of Jesus’ sacrifice.

In Reading we read a story called Carousel.  We worked on sequencing the events of the story through the use of a storyboard.  Check my Friday folder to see my work.

In English we continued adding words to our “try-it” list from our writing.  We also focused on our spelling pattern for the week: words with –y.  I reviewed verbs that tell about now and verbs that tell about the past.

In Math we started learning the concepts of division.  We used counters to make equal groups.  We learned that division means sharing equally.  Keep practicing those 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s facts for multiplication at home!

Social Studies time was spent reviewing Theme 5 on families, traditions, holidays and heroes. We each wrote about our personal hero.  I took my test on Wednesday afternoon.  Miss Usher also gave us a lesson about the upcoming Census as she showed us the actual form she filled out.

Our field trip this week made for some great Science learning!  The presentation of Army Ants and Flying Frogs by National Geographic photographer Mark Moffett was truly enjoyable.  I LOVED my trip and hopefully told you all about it.  We were taken on journeys throughout the world and got to see some interesting photographs.

Don't forget to ask me about our visit from the leprechauns!

A Spirit to Know You

St. Benedict of Nursia

Gracious and Holy Father,
Please give me:
intellect to understand you,
reason to discern you,
diligence to seek you,
wisdom to find you,
a spirit to know you,
a heart to meditate upon you,
ears to hear you,
eyes to to see you,
a tongue to proclaim you,

and perseverance to look for you.

Grant me a perfect end,
your holy presence,
a blessed resurrection
and life everlasting.

Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we discussed the first part of the mass: The Liturgy of the Word.  I learned what parables are and we read some in class.  I had to put the parts of the Liturgy of the Word in order.  I also created a prayer for Lent that will be on our bulletin board outside.

Reading time was spent with a few read alouds.  We started the Grand Canyon Reader awards so we’ve been reading books for this.  We learned some important steps to reading with meaning and these were modeled for us as we read stories together.  I also reviewed the elements of literature through an activity with characters, setting, main idea, problem and solution.

In English this week we looked through our journal writings to find words that we know we misspelled and we wanted to learn how to spell.  We made our own spelling list on a “try it” sheet.  We will continue using these throughout the rest of the year to identify words that we use in our writing.

Math time was spent continuing learning multiplication concepts.  Please make sure I’m practicing my 2s, 5s and 10s facts at home.

In Social Studies we talked about heroes and their contributions to society.  We each were asked to think of our own personal hero for an activity we will do next week.

In Science we finished presenting our animal projects!  I practiced using my leader voice, facing the class and speaking clearly.

Thank you for reading about my week!

3/1/10-3/4/10:

Prayer for Students

God of Light and Truth,
thank you for giving me
a mind that can know
and a heart that can love.
Help me to keep learning every day of my life,
for all knowledge leads to you.
Let me be aware of your presence
in all things and at all times.
Encourage me when work is difficult
and when I am tempted to give up;
encourage me when my brain seems slow
and the way forward is difficult.
Grant me the grace to put my mind to use
exploring the world you have created,
confident that in you there a wisdom
that is real.
Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

Religion class this week was focused on the mass and how we can best participate.  We practiced a few responses and how to hold our hand and stand.  I also went to Adoration on Wednesday.

In Reading we read a story called Jalapeno Bagels.  It connected well with our discussion in social studies about culture, nationality and family traditions.  I enjoyed reading about the different types of foods that this family made.  We also worked on story comprehension and word meanings.

English this week was all about contractions.  We did a few fun activities with contractions to try and remember them ~ ask me at home the “hand motions” Miss Usher taught me!  We took our spelling test on Thursday morning over contractions.

In Math we began our chapter on multiplication and division.  We are learning 2s, 5s and 10s facts only for multiplication.  Please help me practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s at home.  This will help me immensely if I know my skip counting!  Let’s start doing flashcards at home for just facts with 2s, 5s, and 10s!

Social Studies this week was focused on talking about cultures and families.  We each shared some of our own cultures and how our family celebrates our culture.  We also talked about respect among cultures.

In Science we finished typing our animal research reports in the lab so they were ready to be displayed at Science Night on Wednesday.  Thank you for coming to see our models and read our papers.  We worked so hard!  I enjoyed presenting my project to the class.  Next week Miss Usher will be sending home the rubrics for the project.

This Sunday's Gospel ~ Luke 9: 28-36

Jesus took Peter, John, and James
and went up the mountain to pray.
While he was praying his face changed in appearance
and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,
who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus
that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep,
but becoming fully awake,
they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus,
“Master, it is good that we are here;
let us make three tents,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
But he did not know what he was saying.
While he was still speaking,
a cloud came and cast a shadow over them,
and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
Then from the cloud came a voice that said,
“This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
They fell silent and did not at that time
tell anyone what they had seen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week I continued talking and learning about the season of Lent.  We started a new chapter in our religion textbooks about prayer.  I learned different forms and different ways to pray.  I even wrote my own prayer.  We reviewed the three pillars of Lent ~ Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving.  Ask me if I remember what each one means :).

In Reading we entered into a new theme: Family Time.  This theme was launched with reading Brothers and Sisters.  We could make several text to self connections when reading this story, as many of us have brothers and sisters at home.  I worked on comprehension questions and created a "one-pager" about the story.

English this week was focused on learning words with -er at the end.  I also practiced how to identify verbs in sentences.  I learned that a verb is an action word.  We also continued the writing process with our science papers.  I created a few acrostic poems about members of my family.

Math this week was all about fractions!  I took my test on Thursday.  Check my Friday folder or RenWeb to see how I did.

In Social Studies this week I learned how family stories are a part of history.  We read about different kinds of families and even shared some of our own favorite family stories.  I also created a family tree.

In Science I finished my research paper for Science night!  I started typing my paper in computer lab on Monday and our 7th grade buddies helped us finish this up on Thursday.  We also discussed characteristics of each animal classification.  Next week I will be presenting my animal to the class...I need to share my model and a few interesting things I learned!

We had a special presenter come on Tuesday ~ Mrs. Musso!  She is a dental hygienist and talked to us about how to take care of our teeth.  It was fun having her in our classroom!

2/16/10-2/19/10:

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week I learned about the season of Lent.  My classmates and I each made a promise for Lent and talked about not only giving something up but also trying to do something more for God.  We also made a second grade Lenten promise.

In Reading I read the genre of biographies.  I learned that a biography is the story of someone’s life written by another person.  I learned that an autobiography is the story of a person’s life written by that person.  As we read each biography we picked out important details about the person’s life and wrote those down on a few different graphic organizers.

English this week was focused on learning r controlled vowel words.  I also practiced writing different irregular plurals.  We continued the writing process with our science papers.

Math this week was all about fractions!  Check my Friday folder to see how I’m doing with these concepts.

In Social Studies this week I learned about the lives of many famous people from the past through reading their biography.  We also learned about timelines and how those show important events in history.

In Science I finished my draft of my animal report and started to publish!  This will hopefully be done by next week.  A few of us shared out habitat and life cycle paragraphs.  I need to practice sharing this information for when we have oral presentations in class!  I might start typing our papers in computer lab on Monday…stay tuned for details!

2/8/10-2/12/10:

"It is Jesus in fact that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provokes you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle.

It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be grounded down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal." ~ John Paul II

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we prepared to lead Friday’s mass celebration.  It was a beautiful mass!  We also talked about how to share good news with others and learned how we can be a follower of Jesus.  I shared with the class a way that I can bring others closer to God.  We also worked on a small classroom stewardship project by making Valentine's Day cards for a nursing home.

In Reading we created literary responses based on a book we read in class.  Miss Usher asked us to draw and write the characters, setting, main idea, problem and solution (important elements of literature).  We also had to tell her if we liked the book or didn’t like the book and why.  This was a fun activity as we each got to choose our own book to respond to.  In reading groups we read different leveled chapter books and were tested on our comprehension.  Next week we will be reading Biographies in class.  The interview sheet is due back on Tuesday…check my homework folder for details!

In English we talked about how to write a research report and the purpose of this type of writing.  We discussed interesting leads and how to get the reader “hooked” into what we’re writing about.  I learned what alliteration means as we created fun titles for our science papers ~ “Fancy Flamingos” and “Amazing Alligators” were examples.

In Math we learned about lines of symmetry and patterns.  On Thursday we started learning about fractions.  This will continue into next week!

In Social Studies this week I identified that Arizona’s birthday is February 14.  I made a “Happy Birthday Arizona” poster to hang outside of the classroom.  We also learned about one of our national holidays: Presidents’ Day.

In Science we focused on writing our research reports and discussed interesting things we learned about our animals.  We also had buddies with our 7th grade friends.  They shared with us their Animal ABC books!

Thank you for reading about my week!

2/1/10-2/5/10:

Brothers and sisters,
I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received:
that Christ died for our sins
in accordance with the Scriptures;
that he was buried;
that he was raised on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures;
that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.
After that, he appeared to more
than five hundred brothers at once,
most of whom are still living,
though some have fallen asleep.
After that he appeared to James,
then to all the apostles.
Last of all, as to one abnormally born,
he appeared to me.
Therefore, whether it be I or they,
so we preach and so you believed.

1 Corinthians 15: 3-8, 11

Brothers and sisters:
As a body is one though it has many parts,
and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body,
so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
Now the body is not a single part, but many.
You are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.

1/11/10~1/15/10:

Brothers and sisters:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for some benefit.
To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom;
to another, the expression of knowledge according to the
same Spirit;
to another, faith by the same Spirit;
to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit;
to another, mighty deeds;
to another, prophecy;
to another, discernment of spirits;
to another, varieties of tongues;
to another, interpretation of tongues.
But one and the same Spirit produces all of these,
distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.

~1 Corinthians 12: 4-11

Praying for a blessed and joyous 2010 for each of you.  May it be filled with peace and joy!

Prayer for Peace Within

May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of you who choose to claim it.

Happy T

A Thanksgiving Prayer

O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry; When I have work, help me to remember the jobless; When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home at all; When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer, And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency; bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help; By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

This Sunday's Gospel Reading:

Pilate said to Jesus,
"Are you the King of the Jews?"
Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own
or have others told you about me?"
Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I?
Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me.
What have you done?"
Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world.
If my kingdom did belong to this world,
my attendants would be fighting
to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
But as it is, my kingdom is not here."
So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?"
Jesus answered, "You say I am a king.
For this I was born and for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth.
Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

- John 18:33-37

Lord, you came into the world to testify to the truth and preach about God's kingdom.  Help us to hear your voice in our world today.  Give us courage to speak the truth to all those we meet and tell about your unending love.  Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week we read and discussed Chapter 9: God’s Mercy.  We learned about God’s forgiveness and how we can show forgiveness to others.  I read the parable of the Forgiving Father and learned how Jesus always forgives us if we are truly sorry.  We each wrote a forgiveness story.  In Religion next week we will have a test on Unit 3.  This test will cover chapters 7, 8 and 9.  We will spend time reviewing in class on Monday and Tuesday.  Remind me to bring my religion book home next week to study!

11/9/09-11/13/09:

Prayers for Veteran's Day

We ask for blessings on all those who have served their country in the armed forces.  We ask for healing for the veterans who have been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the globe.

God of peace,
we pray for those who have served our nation
and who laid down their lives
to protect and defend our freedom.

We pray for those who have fought,
whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war,
whose nights are haunted by memories
too painful for the light of day.

We pray for those who serve us now,
especially for those in harm's way.
Shield them from danger
and bring them home.

Turn the hearts and minds
of our leaders and our enemies
to the work of justice and a harvest of peace.

Let the peace you left us,
the peace you gave us,
be the peace that sustains,
the peace that saves us. (-Author Unknown)

AMEN.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion we began reading Chapter 8: Making Good Choices.  We started with reading the Gospel story about Peter's denial of Jesus.  We learned that when Jesus rose again, he forgave Peter and told him, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church."  We learned about our conscience, mortal, and venial sins.  I also learned steps to making good choices.  I worked with a partner to make up a story about making good choices.

Reading this week was focused on the genre of Fables.  I read five different fables that taught a moral, or lesson.  In reading groups we talked about what the lesson of the story meant.  We also compared each fable and even got to write a fable of our own!

In English this week we finished our adjectives packet.  We practiced writing words with the –ck and –ke pattern.  I also worked through the writing process and I created my own fable.

In Math we began our chapter on two-digit addition.  We started with adding tens using mental math.  We also learned how to use a hundred chart to add numbers.  On Wednesday we learned how to regroup in addition, first using base ten manipulatives to help.  Don't forget to keep practicing those math facts (see e-mail with links from this week).

In Social Studies this week we talked about Veteran’s Day.  We made cards for the Veterans and wrote about what Veteran’s Day is and why we commemorate it in our country.  On Veteran's Day, Mrs. Reese came in and read a special book to us calledThe Wall by Eve Bunting.  She talked about the Vietnam War and reminded us to continually pray for the Veterans who serve our country and also those who died fighting for our freedom.  We also finishedTheme 3: People at Work, by discussing how the United States exports and imports goods.  I took my test on this theme on Wednesday.

In Science this week we had buddies with our 7th grade friends.  We went outside and observed many of our newly planted trees with our buddies.  We compared the leaves on each and Ms. Whalen told us what the different types of trees are.  Next week we will begin learning about the systems of our body~ digestive, respiratory, and circulatory.

11/2/09-11/6/09:

Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."

-Mark 12:41-44

Lord, the woman in this Gospel story gave her entire livelihood to you.  Help us to give you all that we can of ourselves.  Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

All Saints Day & All Souls Day explained for your teaching at home...

NOVEMBER 1- ALL SAINTS DAY

What is All Saints Day?

All Saints Day is when the Church commemorates all saints, known and unknown. The eve of All Saints is known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. All Saints Day is November 1. These All Saints Day Prayers are related to this theme.

Catholic Liturgy of the Hours All-Saints Prayer

Father, All-Powerful and ever-living God,
today we rejoice in the holy men and women
of every time and place.
May their prayers bring us your forgiveness and love
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Saintly Grace

Almighty and Everlasting God,
who dost enkindle the flame of Thy love in the hearts of the saints,
grant unto us the same faith and power of love;
that, as we rejoice in their triumphs
we may profit by their examples, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

November 2- All Souls Day

What is All Souls Day?

All Souls Day is when the Church commemorates and prays for the holy souls in Purgatory, undergoing purification of their sins before entering heaven. All Souls Day is November 2nd, right after All Saints Day. These All Souls Day Prayers relate to these themes, including praying for those in Purgatory.

[for all our departed brothers and sisters]
Merciful Father,
hear our prayer and console us.
As we renew our faith in Your Son,
whom You raised from the dead,
strengthen our hope
that all our departed brothers and sisters
will share in His resurrection,
who lives and reigns
with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Dear Mom & Dad,

Happy Halloween!!!  Have a safe & fun time.

In Religion this week we presented our saint reports to the class.  I also heard a group of 7th grade presenters talk about their saints~we saw some similar ones in the presentation.  As a class we discussed what service project we would like to do for the year and we learned about All Saints Day & All Souls Day.

In Reading we had opportunities to read silently and choose "just-right" books.  We also did a comprehension activity as a class after reading The Bad Case of the Stripes.  The activity is called a one-pager!  Ask me about this at home :).  We also read a book called The Greatest Homework Excuse and wrote our own homework excuses!  That book was a lot of fun!

In English we practiced how and when to use s' in our writing to show ownership.  We are starting to the learn the difference between 's and s'!  We also practiced how to use our "presentation" voice as we presented our saint report to the class.

In Math we continued our chapter with counting coins.  This week we started using half dollars in our counting.  Let's keep practicing at home...next week we start with how to make change.

In Social Studies we wrapped up Theme 2 by reviewing our land & water features, Regions of the USA, our North American neighbors, and natural resources.  Look for my test results in my Friday folder.

In Science we talked about change in weather and weather patterns.

10/19/09-10/23/09:

This Sunday’s Gospel: Mark 10: 46-52

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,
Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,
sat by the roadside begging.
On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
he began to cry out and say,
"Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
But he kept calling out all the more,
"Son of David, have pity on me."
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
So they called the blind man, saying to him,
"Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?"
The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you."
Immediately he received his sight
and followed him on the way.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week I finished writing my saint report.  Next week I will present my report to the class.

In Reading we read a story called Around the Pond: Who’s been here?  The children in the story were good scientists because they looked at clues around the pond to figure out what animals had lived there before.  We used our reading skill of predicting what will happen next.

In English this week we focused on the writing genre of Personal Narratives.  First, we learned what a personal narrative is, what it looks like, and how it is written.  Then we began to make a list of topics we would like to write about.  Our spelling words this week were double consonant words and we learned the difference between a command and an exclamation.

In Math this week we began our chapter on money.  We started off counting coins together (quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies).  Make sure I practice this at home.  Then we started writing groups of coins that have the same amount and we also compared groups of coins by using <, >, or = symbols.

In Social Studies we talked about natural resources in our environment and how important they are to us.  We watched a video on BrainPop about natural resources and how some are renewable and nonrenewable.  I also learned about the different regions of the United States- The West, The Midwest, The East, and The South.  I began to identify Canada & Mexico as our North American neighbors.

In Science this week we had buddies with our 7th grade friends.  Together we did a lesson about states of matter.  We also went outside for Science to do an activity about living, non-living, and once living things.

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion this week we talked about our saint reports.  I learned that a saint is a holy person who followed God and died for their faith.  I also reviewed two of my grade level prayers: Morning Offering & Act of Contrition.  We will have new prayers to learn for the 2nd quarter.

In Reading this week we read a story called Exploring Parks with Ranger Dockett.  We learned about what a park ranger’s job is and how they take care of the environment.  I also learned the difference between a fact and an opinion.

In English this week I learned about words with consonant clusters, and we did a word hunt for words that had two different sounds for c.  We also did a little activity with antonyms.

In Math we wrapped up Chapter 3 on data and graphing by reviewing tally mark graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs.  We also learned about range and mode.  Look next week for my score on my Chapter 3 test.

In Social Studies this week we worked on our world map.  We labeled continents and oceans.  We also continued to review what continent, country, state, and city we live in.  Some of us are still mixing it up.  This week we had a great opportunity to visit the 6th grade cultural fair.  We learned about different countries and their culture.

In Science this week Ms. Whalen came in!  She brought in pieces of coal and being the good scientists that we are we made observations, asked questions, and predicted where we think it came from.  Our reading story this week also connected well with Science as we discussed plants, animals, and their habitat.

“I Have A Mission” by Cardinal Newman

God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have a mission.- I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in the chain, a bond of connection between persons.  He has not created me for naught. I shall do good. I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place while not intending it- If  do but keep His commandments.  Therefore I must trust in Him. Whatever, wherever I am. I can never be thrown away.  If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity can serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about.  He may take my friends.  He may throw me among  strangers.  He may make me feel desolate, make my spirit sink, hide my future from me- still He knows what He is about.

Dear Mom and Dad,

In Religion this week I reviewed Unit 2 in class.  Some important things we talked about were saints, prayer, and trust.  I also reviewed some important figures in Jesus’ life like his mother Mary, his father Joseph, and his cousin John the Baptist.  We also reviewed what we had learned about the Holy Trinity. On Wednesday we had a school wide Rosary and attended Adoration.

In Reading this week we got a chance to explore how we can choose “just-right” books.  I showed Miss Usher a book that I am reading silently and we worked together to figure out if that book was a good choice.  I got to share my book with my reading group, too.

In English this week we reviewed how to make a 2nd grade sentence.  Miss Usher also noticed that some of us are not using ‘s correctly in our writing.  We reviewed that ‘s is used to show ownership.  Like “Noah’s Ark” and “the dog’s bone.”  I will continue to practice this more in my writing.

In Math this week we began Chapter 3 on data and graphing.  I learned how to make tally marks to count votes.  I used a graph to examine differences in numbers and also learned how to read a pictograph.

Social studies & Science time this week was spent looking at different features of our earth.  We talked about mountains, lakes, rivers, islands, oceans, plains, and valleys.  We each brought in pictures showing these land and water features.  In Social Studies, I also began to identify where I live in the world by continent, country, state and city.  Please review this skill with me at home.

St. Francis of Assisi: Feast Day is October 4

Blessing for Pets

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”

Religion this week was all about the Holy Spirit!  I also drew my own representation for the Holy Trinity.  I also wrote about how I am a disciple of God.

In Reading this week we read a story called “Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night.”  We worked on comparing and contrasting characters.  In groups we also talked about if we’ve ever been camping before, like the family had in the story.

In English this week we reviewed nouns that name more than one and how spelling changes among those nouns.  We also learned compound words and practiced spelling patterns for long vowels.

In Math this week we finished up chapter 2.  I learned about ordering numbers and rounding to the nearest ten.  Check my Friday folder next week for my test results.

In Social Studies this week we reviewed Theme 1 about communities, neighborhoods, and map skills.  We took a test and then Miss Usher reviewed all the correct answers with us so we could see what we missed.  Then she gave us another test after that to check for our understanding.

In Science this week we began our unit on classification.  We went on a nature walk and collected things from outside.  In groups, we began sorting these items into groups based on their characteristics.  We also sorted pictures of animals based on their appearances.  I learned that good scientists know how to classify objects.

Dear Mom & Dad,

Religion this week was spent talking about Jesus.  We read three gospel stories in class this week: one of Jesus’ birth, His baptism, and another of Jesus talking to his disciples about their arguing over who was the greatest.  I also identified ways that I can set a good example like Jesus did.

Reading this week was focused on the genre of Poetry.  I brought in a favorite poem to share with the class and even wrote my own poem!  I look forward to sharing it with you.  Mrs. Duvall started literacy coaching this week in our classroom.  We have enjoyed her coming into the classroom to help us with reading groups- she gave us a little lesson about poetry, too!

English this week was spent learning about regular and irregular plural nouns (example: hat/hats, watch/watches, fox/foxes, etc.)  I learned that when a noun ends with –ss, -ch, -x, or –sh, and I want to write more than one, I have to add an –es to the end of the word.  We also practiced how to correct run-on sentences.

In Math this week I continued learning about place value – tens and ones digits.  We also learned about even and odd numbers.  I found number patterns on a hundred chart, too!  I counted by 2's, 3's, and 5's.  We also learned symbols for how to compare whole numbers: <, >, or =.

In Science this week 2nd grade worked with our 7th grade buddies!  I went on a nature scavenger hunt outside with my buddy and found leaves, flowers, bark, trees, bugs, weeds, birds, and animals.  Ms. Whalen helped us with this fun project.

Social studies this week was all about different types of communities.  We learned what urban, suburban, and rural communities look like.  I worked in a group to sort the pictures I brought.  We created posters to show off to the school!

An excerpt from this Sunday’s Gospel of Mark

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee,
but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
He was teaching his disciples and telling them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him,
and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to question him.

9/9/09-9/11/09:

Dear Lord,

Today, on this anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember & pray for all those whose lives were lost.  We also ask that you be with the families and friends who mourn.  May they know the comfort that comes from knowledge and love of you.  God, we ask that you bring peace to our hearts, to our country, and to our world as we remember this tragic day.  We ask for the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi as we pray…

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace
Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life. Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

The majority of our time this week was spent with IOWA Testing.  We took stretch breaks throughout the testing period to help us stay focused and calm.  We will continue the IOWA tests into next week with testing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  I need to remember to get a lot of sleep & eat a full breakfast so that I can do my best!

In Religion this week we worked on a review packet of chapters 1-3.  I took a test on the unit after reviewing the chapter concepts together as a class.  Look in my Friday folder for this packet (it’s green) to see how I did!

In Reading this week we continued with our theme of Silly Stories and read Mrs. Brown Went to Town.  This story had some rhythm and rhyme and our class talked about what that meant.  Miss Usher also showed us how we can answer our comprehension questions in a full, complete sentence.  We practiced this skill as a class.

In English we sorted long vowel words and I continued to work on writing 2nd grade sentences that have at least 5 words.

In Math this week I used models to show subtraction facts.  I also worked on how to write number sentences.

In Social Studies we began talking about groups we belong to.  I shared a few groups that I am a part of (like Cub Scouts, Brownies, Church, SJB school, sports teams, etc.). I also began learning about types of communities.

In Science this week we did a bread experiment to wrap up our unit on germs.  Ask me about this at home :).  This experiment helped us learn about the scientific process.  We made predictions and next week we will observe what is happening to the bread.

Children's Morning Prayer

Lord, in the morning I start each day,
By taking a moment to bow and pray.
I start with thanks, and then give praise
For all your kind and loving ways.

Today if sunshine turns to rain,
If a dark cloud brings some pain,
I won't doubt or hide in fear
For you, my God, are always near.

I will travel where you lead;
I will help my friends in need.
Where you send me I will go;
With your help I'll learn and grow.

Hold my family in your hands,
As we follow your commands.
And I will keep you close in sight
Until I crawl in bed tonight.

Amen.

-- Mary Fairchild

Dear Mom & Dad,

In Religion I learned that there are two parts to the Bible:  The Old Testament and New Testament.  We talked about the types of stories that can be found in each.  I worked with my friends and created a poster for the Kindergarten children.  We wrote down what we would tell them about Jesus.  We also delivered these posters to the classrooms and presented.  There was Adoration on Wednesday in the chapel and we learned why we, as Catholics, attend.

In Reading this week I read a story called Julius.  It was about a pig that became a pet!  How would you feel about me bringing a pig home with me to keep?  We also talked about “Fantasy vs. Realism” in relation to this story.

English time was focused on how to read and write short e, short o, and short u vowel words and separate those words into groups.  We also learned what synonyms are and how to use those in sentences.  I also practiced how to read and write titles for people like Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Miss.

In Math we began working on our subtraction facts and strategies to remember our subtraction facts.  We used the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction to solve the problems.

In Social Studies my classmates and I brought in pictures of our city mayor.  We shared them with the class and also identified our Arizona Senators and Governor.  Ask me at home if I remember!  We also created an illustration to help us remember the three branches of our government- check for this in my Friday folder!  I also learned about citizenship and Mrs. Carlos came into our classroom to talk to us about how she became a citizen of the United States!

For Science this week we had a special presentation.  Mrs. Krakora (Mrs. Esposito’s mom) came into to talk to us about germ prevention.  She is a nurse and taught us about how to keep ourselves healthy.  We learned about different types of bacteria and virus and how germs can spread and multiply.  Ask me about the confetti and glitter experiment to show how germs can spread!  Next week Miss Usher will be doing a bread experiment with us.

Prayer for Students

God of Light and Truth,
thank you for giving me
a mind that can know
and a heart that can love.
Help me to keep learning every day of my life,
for all knowledge leads to you.
Let me be aware of your presence
in all things and at all times.
Encourage me when work is difficult
and when I am tempted to give up;
encourage me when my brain seems slow
and the way forward is difficult.
Grant me the grace to put my mind to use
exploring the world you have created,
confident that in you there a wisdom
that is real.
Amen.

Dear Mom & Dad,

Thank you for coming to Curriculum Night on Thursday and evaluating how well I cleaned my desk – I hope you enjoyed learning all about 2nd grade!  Here is what I did in Miss Usher’s class this week:

In Religion we learned about God’s promise and the choice that Adam & Eve made.  We talked about original sin and names we had for Jesus.  We reviewed how every choice we make has consequences and those can be good or bad.  I chose a name for Jesus and illustrated it.  They are hanging up in the classroom!  I hope you saw mine in Curriculum Night!

In Reading we read a silly story called Dragon Gets By.  This was a good chance for us to talk about making healthy eating choices.  We worked on a story map for this selection and also got to read it with a friend.

English was all about learning about the writing process.  Miss Usher let us peer revise and edit our name pieces with a friend.  We are learning how to become expert proofreaders through our DOL (morning work).  I also learned what Homophones are and practiced how to use them in sentences.  Ask me the difference between know and no!

In Math we continued to work on strategies for learning our addition facts.  I need to remember to practice my math facts at home!  We used our double facts, making ten to add, and we also added 3 numbers together.  I used math manipulatives this week to help with these assignments.

Social Studies was all about our government.  I learned that there are three branches to our national government – The President (Executive Branch), The Congress (Legislative Branch), and The Supreme Court (Judicial Branch).  We began to discuss our local government and who helps take care of our city and state.

In Science we worked in groups to plan out a healthy lunch menu.  We illustrated our food choices.  These are also hanging up in the classroom.  We learned about the food groups.  I also have been learning ways to keep myself healthy.

Dear Mom & Dad,

This is a preview of what I learned this week in Miss Usher's Class:

Religion- We learned how we can show appreciation, give thanks, and care for God's Creation. God's greatest gift to us was His Son Jesus. We made plans of how we are going to take care of God's Creation.

Reading- Miss Usher & Mrs. Duvall are working with us individually on reading this week. This will continue into next week. We have had opportunities to read independently and out loud in class.  We are becoming familiar with how to choose just-right books. We are exploring our classroom library and school library and finding books that interest us :). Miss Usher always wants us to have a silent reading book at our desk.

In English this week we talked about features of sentences including capital letters and punctuation.  We learned how to do our morning work – DOL – Daily Oral Language.  We are becoming experts at making proofreader marks.  We have also been practicing how to write 2nd grade sentences through free writing activities.

We started in our Math books this week! First we did a "Welcome to Second Grade" page along with Basic Facts pages, reviewing addition and subtraction facts to 10.  We also started Chapter 1. We learned the Commutative Property of Addition (ex: 2 + 4 = 6 and 4 + 2 = 6 - turnaround facts), how to use a number line to count on, and using doubles to find the sum of whole numbers (ex: 7 + 7 = 14).

In Social Studies we discussed voting, rules, laws, and government.  We created our own classroom rules and voted on them.  We discussed elections and how our nation has a representative democracy.

Science this week was all about staying healthy.  We learned about the food groups and healthy eating choices.
