A New Year’s Prayer

May God make your year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;
Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;
Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;
Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most, and by making you anxious to be there to help.
God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

Star Student - Eliana was our Star Student this week.  She told us that her favorite food is rice, her favorite animal is a wildcat (as in the mascot for East High in High School Musical), and she is good at soccer.  Eliana admires her family, wishes she could go to Disneyland, and read us her favorite book, Silly Sally.

Birthdays - This week Maddie celebrated her 7th birthday.  Ashley will turn 7 on the 27th, and Kristen will turn 6 1/2 on the 27th.  Happy birthdays, girls!

 DIOCESAN CURRICULUM

Religion -An Advent Candle ceremony in the courtyard started our week with attention focused on the story of Christmas.  We listened to a few books about the first Christmas, and read the sections in our religion books about Christmas.  We also did some activities and sang songs related to the upcoming holiday.

Math - We compared numbers to each other using greater than, less than, and equal to.  We estimated numbers based on groups of tens, and we solved story problems.  We completed Chapter 8 with some exercises with probability, and will review the skills from the chapter in January before we take the chapter test.

Language Arts - We reviewed the phonics and spelling sounds we have had so far this year.  The list of all of the spelling words the class should be able to read and spell is at the end of the December 12 newsletter.  It was also sent home as a hard copy.  We practiced reading the poems and songs for our class Christmas program, and presented them to our families on Thursday.

Literature Projects – Beginning in January, the class will do a special literature project at home each month.  Directions for the assignments will be sent home at the beginning of the month, and they will be due at the end of the month.  The assignments are easy, but should be looked at in several ways:  the children will begin to learn how to pace themselves for long-term assignments (in January, it will be selecting a poem after reading several, copying it, illustrating it, and answering some questions about it); it will let them focus on and enjoy a few genres of literature; and it will give them another opportunity to give a presentation to the class.  January assignments will be shared during February, and so on.

Spelling - We will be starting the long vowel sounds when we return to school in January.  Our first sound is long a. Words 1-15 are list words, 16-20 are bonus words.

1.     make

2.     came

3.     take

4.     name

5.     gave

6.     place

7.     skate

8.     snake

9.     face

10.   cage

12.  shall

13.  walk

14.  children

15.  family

16.  new

17.  year

18. January

19. winter

20. snowman

Science - We categorized the pictures of animals the children brought in last week.  We reviewed some of the traits of each kind of animal. We visited Ms. Whalen's classroom again because she had the traveling Desert Sonoran Sea Aquarium there.  It was very interesting for the class, and they got to have some hands-on with several kinds of sea specimens.

OTHER - We had the privilege of attending of attending some special performances this week.  We saw some ballet dances performed by the Kimberly Lewis production of "Nutcracker"; we attended the seventh grade performance of A Christmas Carol; and, of course, we were in our own performance!

 THIS AND THAT

Mass - I want to let you know in advance that our class will be hosting the school-wide Mass on February 13th.  I will fill you in with more details later.

MONEY - We will be starting our unit on money soon, so each child will need to have $3.00 in coins in the following amounts:$1.00 in quarters, $1.00 in dimes, $.50 in nickels, and $.50 in pennies.

They should be in a plastic frosting container, if you have one.  If you don't, send in the money in a ziplock baggie.  We have some extra containers at school.  If you have any extras, they will be welcomed.  I prefer the frosting containers so that we have the same items on everyone's desktops.

Supplies - Ask your child if he or she needs any supply replacements, such as markers, dry erase markers, crayons, erasers, etc.

Adopt-A-Family - Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Adopt-A-Family project.  A special thanks goes to Mrs. Flynn for coordinating it, and to Mrs. Dippre, Mrs. Ehmann, and Mrs. Cardellini, who served as our interpreter, for delivering the items to our adopted family.  A photo of their children, along with our own Jordan and Sparkles, is posted on our class website.

Class Christmas Program and Party - Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our class Christmas program.  Although we were not able to give it the time I would have liked to have to prepare for it, I think the children gave a very nice performance.  I also want to thank the parents who were able to help with the class Christmas party.  It went very smoothly, and the children seemed to enjoy it.  I didn't know we had so many future American Idols in the group!

Special Show and Tell:  We will have a special holiday Show and Tell on Friday, January 9.  Everyone may bring in an item to share about their vacations, or Christmas, etc.  We will follow the same Show and Tell procedures as usual.  This will be a one-chance only day.  We will resume the regular Show and Tell schedule the following week.

A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.  Author unknown.

If there is no joyous way to give a festive gift, give love away.  Unknown.

Star Student - Madeleine was our Star Student this week.  Her favorite animal is a duck, her favorite food is turkey, and she is good at drawing and creating.  Maddie wishes she could have a camera, she admires her mom, and she plays the piano. She read us her favorite book,  Dear Zoo, her favorite color is pink, and her favorite place to go is her cabin.

Birthdays – No one in our class celebrated a birthday this past week.

 DIOCESAN CURRICULUM

Religion -We attended Mass on Monday for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and we celebrated Mary again on Friday with the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  We talked about the ways we can serve God and others, and we made some clay Holy Family figures. The Christmas program on Thursday had songs mostly about Santa Claus, but the tie-in to St. Nicholas and the birth of Jesus was meaningful to the children.

Upcoming Religious Events at school:
Monday, Dec 15, Advent Wreath Lighting at 8:05 in the courtyard
Friday, Dec 19, Mass at 10:30 and noon release.

Math - We solved problems using number patterns (counting by 2's, 5's,10's), we learned about probability by using spinners and keeping score, and we reviewed ordinal numbers.    Using the hundred chart, we learned about number relationships, such as one before, one after, ten before, and ten after.

Language Arts   - We concentrated on the consonant digraphs, and will continue this lesson next week.  We read about a Hermit Crab that needs a new home, and read a lot of opposite words; the class wrote about themselves as if they were elves, and they wrote thank you notes to Ms. Whalen for the "field trip" we took to her classroom last week.

Spelling - there will be no new spelling words this week, but we will be reviewing and testing out on the list that follows at the end of the newsletter.

Science - Because our plants were overwatered, they started to produce an odor that was very unpleasant. We are going to work on this project again. On Thursday evening, we went to the following link to see if our class could "build" successful rollercoasters.  Some of the teams did very well.  This is an interesting site for the whole family.   sideshow.questacon.edu.au/maketracks.html

Social Studies - We are learning about Christmas and customs around the world.

THIS AND THAT

(I don't know why this section is yellow - I seem to get a new challenge every week!)

Classroom Christmas Party - in the classroom at 10:30 AM Thursday.  Parents who would like to help us are invited to attend, but no siblings will be joining us for this.

Adopt-A-Family - If you haven't already done so, please return the gift tag you chose and the gift to the classroom so that they  can be delivered to our adopted family at the end of the week.  Thank you so much for yourgenerosity.

REMINDERS

Snacks and Water Bottles (with the correct lid)- please - send one every day (including Friday!).  Thanks!

CTODP Update - a note from Lisa Campbell:

If you have not made your CTODP contribution yet, please take the opportunity to do so next week.  Forms were sent home with your child this week.  You can mail it in or drop it off in the front office (in a sealed envelop) and we will mail it for you.

On Monday, Tempe Schools Credit Union will be here to assist with contributions in your name through the credit union.  It will take only five minutes of your time.

You can also make your contributions on line at www.catholictuion.org.

Once you have made your contribution, don't forget to enter your name into the drawing for front row seating and parking for the Christmas Program!

The absolute last second to make an on-line CTODP contribution is 11:59:59 p.m.  However, we do not recommend this sort of extreme, living-on-the-edge, risk-taking.  It assumes 100% precision and accuracy on the part of too many and too much.

Star Student - Michael was our Star Student this week.  He told us that his favorite food is macaroni and cheese, his favorite animal is a cheetah, and he wishes he could have a goldfish.  Michael admires his grandmother, he is good at karate and swimming, and he is a Cub Scout. Michael read Where the Wild Things Are to the class.

Birthdays – No one in our class celebrated a birthday this week.

 DIOCESAN CURRICULUM

Religion - We talked about Advent and started a few Advent activities.  Besides coloring in an Advent tree each day, the children wrote clues about themselves, and we are trying to guess who the special "elf" is each day.  We attended a school-wide Advent ceremony on Monday morning, and will continue to do this each week.  On Wednesday afternoon, we went to Adoration, and then participated in Benediction after.  Fr. Gary talked with the class about both traditions.

Upcoming Religious Events at school:

Monday, Dec 8 mass at 9:00 - Advent Wreath lighting at the church
Friday, Dec 12 Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Math - This week we worked on counting with patterns, such as by 2's and 5's, we showed numbers in different ways (35  = 3 tens and 5 ones = 30 +5 = thirty-five.   We learned about 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4, and probability, too.

Language Arts  - This week we concentrated on the short sound of u; we also learned about triple clusters: str, spl, spr; the class read some stories, wrote about important wishes, and worked on flash cards.  We started reading "T'was the Night Before Christmas."  The class is working on reading and then answering comprehension questions in complete sentences. In reading we focused on sequence of events, and drawing conclusions.  We also focused on using question marks and question words in English.

Social Studies - We learned about families from different countries getting together for Thanksgiving.  We started reading about Christmas in different countries.

THIS AND THAT

Assessments  - Since the quarter (and semester!) ends next Friday, we will be doing some assessments in the classroom during the next two weeks.  Please have your child attend school as much as possible so he/she doesn't miss any of the evaluations.  It takes just as long to give one child a make-up test individually as it does to give the whole class a test.  We have a lot to do this week and next, and I would prefer not to leave any items blank on your child's report card because we didn't have a chance to give a make up test.  Thank you in advance!  (I understand about illnesses - please don't send any sick, feverish children to school!)

Write and Read and Show and Tell - for Friday, December 12: I need to check with the students to see who is on the list.  I will update this ASAP.

I came that you may have and enjoy life and have it in abundance, until it overflows.    John 10:10

STAR STUDENT  - Nolan was our Star Student this week.  He told us that he  likes most kinds of food, but  especially chicken nuggets,  his favorite animal is a turtle, and he admires his  mom.  Nolan is good at reading,  his favorite thing  about school is religion,  and he  read to us from a Star Wars chapter book.  The class  met and asked questions of  Nolan's step-brother, who served as a US Marine in Iraq.

BIRTHDAYS - No class birthdays this week.

SPECIAL INTENTIONS - If you have any special intentions you would like the class to pray for, please let me know.

DIOCESAN CURRICULUM

RELIGION - We talked about our responsibility for taking care of God's gifts to us. We gave Mary a lot of pretty flowers, sang to her, and said part of the rosary by her statue to honor her on her birthday on Monday.  The class took a religion test on Chapters 1 and 2.    On Wednesday, we attended a special teaching mass that Fr. Gary said for the First Graders in the chapel.

MATH - We completed Chapter 1 in our books, and took a test on it.  In Chapter 2 we are learning that subtraction is taking away or showing a difference.  We learned the name for the minus sign, and are practicing subtraction problems.  We are learning that we need to look carefully at the function sign in math problems.

LANGUAGE ARTS  -  We read the big book I Am Six, and began Theme One, Week One, which reinforces the letters C, S, T, and M and their sounds.  We also used short a to make several words, and the students wrote several sentences from dictation.  We read some short stories about cats in our phonics readers and leveled readers, and began reading stories in our anthology books, too.  The class wrote about some funny things animals might do, copied an apple poem, and wrote about Mary and their Teddy Bears.

HANDWRITING - I assessed the formation of the letters c, o, a, d, g, q.  While every child was able to form the letters correctly under individual scrutiny and some gentle reminders, several reverted to bad habits when left on their own.  Please monitor your child as he/she writes - letters should not EVER be started at the bottom, and the letters above all go in a counter-clockwise direction.  They also all start at "2:00" on a clock face.  I tell them that those letters will look perfect if they all begin like a "c."  Next week we will be working hard to properly form the letters that begin with vertical lines:  b, h, k, l, m, n, p, and r.

SCIENCE -We are continuing with our study about the human body, nutrition, and the food pyramid.  We learned about muscles, sleep, and teeth, as well as bacteria.

SOCIAL STUDIES - On Thursday, the whole school met at the flagpole for the Pledge of Allegiance, announcements, and special prayers to honor the people and events of September 11, 2001.  The class took a test on our August social studies unit, and started the September unit.  We talked about rules and the need for them, which fit right in perfectly with our DWP skills.  We learned about Mary McLeod Bethune, and listened to the book Flan de Coco. As an exercise in teamwork, we made butter and ate it with bread (and honey, which is also made with bee-teamwork).

COMPUTER LAB- After working on formatting for a list (such as a spelling test), the class tried to "Feed The Monster" a well-balanced meal.

Without faith, nothing is possible.

With it, nothing is impossible.

Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), Educator

STAR STUDENT  -  Because we had a short week, we didn't have a Star Student - we had three!  Sean, Bernadette, and Victoria each took over as Star Student for a day because the weeks they are scheduled for later in the year only have four  school days in them.

BIRTHDAYS - No class birthdays this week.

SPECIAL INTENTIONS - Please remember Gracie's grandfather and Jordan's great-grandmother in your prayers.  Also, please remember Mrs. Hernandez and her new baby, Grace, in your prayers.

DIOCESAN CURRICULUM

RELIGION - We learned that God created the world.  He gave us many things that we are able to use in many ways, but we also have a responsibility to care for God's world.

MATH - We added to eight, made up addition sentences using our family members as addends, and learned to add in vertical form.  We also learned that the equal sign means "is the same as," and it doesn't matter on which side of the equal sign we find the answer (1+2=3 and 3=1+2). We also tried to understand the subtle difference between adding on and adding together (adding on:  There were 3 ducks in a pond, and two more came along. How many are there now?  Adding together:  There are three boys and three girls.  How many are there in all? ). Later on, they will try to understand the difference in subtraction between "taking away" (three ducks, one flies away, how many now?) and "differences" between numbers  (He has 3 ducks, she has 2, how many more?) The reason they need to understand what is being asked is so that they can identify the correct function to use when doing story problems.
MATH FACTS This would be the best time to start having your child memorize his/her math facts.  I will include the facts at the bottom of the page that your child should begin memorizing this week.

LANGUAGE ARTS  - We finished reviewing the letters to "z."  The children were also checked to make sure they can name each letter (capital and lower case), and give the correct sounds for the consonants.  I also listened to them read individually to see what level they are starting on for the year. We read some more stories and poems, and are ready to begin with our reading groups next week.  See a note below about an after school tutorial program that is being offered at SJB.

HANDWRITING - There will be a handwriting assessment this coming week to see if the children are forming these letters correctly: c, o, a, d, g, q.
SCIENCE -We are continuing with our study about the human body, nutrition, and the food pyramid.

SOCIAL STUDIES -No time for SS this week, but Mrs. Douglas met with the class and talked about school-wide rules, and "no-go zones."

COMPUTER LAB- We are working on learning the (MS Word or Star Office) format we will use all year for our practice spelling tests, and the class is learning how to access the class website LINKS page.  Listening to and following instructions will be an important part of computer lab this year.

                              This and That:

NEW ITEMS:

READING TUTORIAL - Mrs. Carol Duvall has taken over the Reading Specialist position at St. John Bosco this year.  She will be working with the teachers in the classrooms on a regular basis, and she will also be offering reading tutorials after school.  Teachers will be giving her the names of students they feel would benefit from extra tutoring.  I haven't had a chance to really discern the learning styles and aptitudes of my students yet, but you may already feel that this is a program that you would definitely like to have your child participate in.  There is no extra cost, it is after school (so there will be no pulling children from their regular class instruction), and it will be held in a small group setting.  Please let me know if you are interested in this program for your child, or contact Mrs. Duvall at cduvall@sjbosco.org. I will be contacting parents fairly soon if I feel that this is a program that will be helpful for your child.  We do not want to let too much time pass before any intervention or extra practice begins taking place.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS - If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, I need to meet with you first to go over some of the things we do and the guidelines I will have you follow.  I would like to do this next week so that we can begin to have volunteers starting the week of the 15th.  Volunteer times will be Mondays through Thursdays from 10:15 to 11:45. I will be available two times to do this, so please plan to come in for a short meeting either this coming Wednesday or Thursday at 3:15. You also need to make sure that you have had your initial SET training or have renewed it.  Mrs. Nimsger has volunteered to organize the volunteers, so you should be hearing from her soon.

WRITE, READ, SHOW, AND TELL for Friday, September 12:  McKenzie, Tori, Ariana, Kristen, Heather, Eliana, Gracie, and Ryan.  At home, they will write three sentences about their items. In school, they will read them to the class, and then receive questions or comments. Here is an example of a Show and Tell item:

1.  This is my Olympic Gold Medal.

2.  I won it for figure skating.

3.  I am very proud of it.

THANK YOU TO:

Mrs. Flynn and Mrs. Lenz for doing some "homework" for the class.

CURRENT/CONTINUING ITEMS:

Birthday of Mary –  Monday, September 8th, is the feast of the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus.  If you would like to send in a flower with your child on Monday, we will place them in the vase near Mary, and then say the rosary.

TEDDY BEAR DAY - Teddy Bear Day is September 9th.  If your child would like to bring in a stuffed Teddy Bear (not an action figure or other non-plush toy), he or she may do so.  I am asking that the bears be no larger than a "Build-a-Bear" size, and that they follow the rules of the classroom (they will have to sit in a time out for a little while if they do flips, somersaults, and other behaviors that are distracting to me or the students).  We have done this in the past, and the bears are usually very well-behaved.  A couple have had a short "time out," but were then perfect for the rest of the day.  In case anyone forgets, I have  stuffed animals in the classroom that would be happy to spend the day with a child.
ART DRAWING PADS - Mrs. Mahoney has asked that each child has a drawing pad at school for art class.  She said that last year's partially used ones would be fine to use.
APPLES - Would you please send in an apple some time in the next week?  It can be red, yellow, or green.  They will be shared by the class in many different ways over the next couple of weeks.  We will do taste tests, make healthy snacks, and do other interesting things with them.
Scholastic NewspaperScholastic Magazines are $4.60 per student.  You can either send in cash or a check made out to Carol Perkins.  I will pay the bill when I have collected all of the money.

WISH LIST:
*tennis balls (can be used ones) for the bottoms of our chairs

*hamster food

*hamster bedding

Classroom Parties and Activities  - We are collecting money at the beginning of the year to cover all of the parties and special activities we have in class, including the Thanksgiving feast and the Mother's and Father's Day celebrations.  The total will be $30.00 per child.

SNACKS - EVERY CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE A SNACK EVERY DAY.

Take care, have a good week, and call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Yours in Christ,

Carol Perkins

"If God can work through me, he can work through anyone."
- St. Francis of Assisi

STAR STUDENT  - This week's Star Student was Alexa. Her favorite food is noodles, she likes dogs, and she likes Junie B. Jones books.  Alexa's favorite part of school is recess, and wishes she could have a fish and another American Girl doll.  Alexa is good at riding bikes, and she admires her mother.  She read the class a book called There Was A Bold Woman.

BIRTHDAYS - There were no birthdays in our classroom this week.  The whole school helped Fr. Gary celebrate his birthday at Mass on Friday.

SPECIAL INTENTIONS - Please remember Gracie's grandfather and Jordan's great-grandmother in your prayers.

DIOCESAN CURRICULUM

RELIGION -We learned that God is our Creator, and He made us in His image.  He made the world and everything in it.  We drew pictures of our favorite things that God made.

MATH - We found all the facts that add to seven, and learned about the commutative property of addition (or, as they say in our books, we "turned the train around."  If you add 2+3=5, you can also add 3+2=5).

LANGUAGE ARTS

We reviewed more of the alphabet - letters I to P - this week.  When working with the sounds, we are thinking of how the sounds feel as we make them (eg – “b”and “P” are noisy and quiet “lip poppers”).  We read and enjoyed more alphabet poetry, more folk tales (Anansi and the Tiger, The Porridge Pot), and we wrote some Labor Day stories. I wrote a little book called If A Monster for my daughter, and after reading it to the class, the children wrote what they would do if they encountered a monster.  We made it into a class book, which the children are enjoying reading. For English, we worked on identifying the naming  and action parts of a sentence.

HANDWRITING We worked on these letters, which all begin the same way: letters c, o, a, d, g, and q.  When forming these letters, the pencil should not be picked up.  As you watch your child practice his/her handwriting, please refer to the D'Nealian handout I gave you the other evening.
SCIENCE - We are continuing with our study about the human body, nutrition, and the food pyramid. We checked the amount of grease in our snacks the other day by letting them rest on paper napkins for a while before eating them.  Then we held the napkins up to the light to see how much grease was left on them.  We are listening to the book Inside Ralphie - a Magic School Bus book.

SOCIAL STUDIES -We talked about what families do in the country and in cities.  For Labor Day, we discussed what kinds of jobs would be useful if we had to start our own town, and which would be fun.  The children all chose a useful and a fun job.  We talked about what families do in the country and cities. They also wrote about what their jobs are at home, and what the consequences would be if they did not perform them.

                              This and That:

Birthday of Mary – Next Monday, September 8th, is the feast of the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Scholastic Newspaper – Along with listening to and reading a variety of stories, the children really enjoy reading non-fiction material.  Each year we order the Scholastic Newspaper.  There are four a month, and they cover a variety of topics all year long.  We have ordered them again, and the cost is only $4.60 a student.  You can either send in cash or a check made out to Carol Perkins.  I will pay the bill when I have collected all of the money.  After we read the newspapers in class, your children will take them home.  Ask them to read them to you.  You will notice the text becomes more difficult as the year goes on.

Parent Volunteers - If you are interested in helping in the classroom, at home, or in the classroom, please return the volunteer forms that were included in the orange folder on Curriculum Night.  I will use these forms to contact interested parents about meeting to discuss plans for the parties.  Hopefully, we will have a parent who is interested in coordinating the classroom volunteers.  This person would contact the parents and set up a schedule for in-classroom help.  I usually have parent volunteers helping at center time, Mondays through Thursdays.  I will be holding a "training" class for the parents who want to help in the classroom pretty soon.

WISH LIST:

  • tennis balls (can be used ones) for the bottoms of our chairs
  • hamster food
  • hamster bedding
  • on Curriculum Night I had walnut shell halves on my wish list - please do NOT send any in.  A parent reminded me that even the empty shells could be harmful around children with tree nut allergies.

THANK YOU TO:

-Mrs. Nolan for some Hermit crab supplies

-Mrs. Flynn, Mrs. Lenz, Mrs. Gregg, and Mrs. Flatley for work they have done for the class at home.

Classroom Volunteers and Parties - At Curriculum Night, I asked the parents present to make a choice between the following:  would they prefer to send in cash or a check to cover all of the classroom events for the year, be asked to donate for each event as it comes up, or contribute items for each party.  Collecting money at the beginning of the year was preferred, so we will do it that way.  We will budget the activity money so it lasts throughout the year, including the Thanksgiving feast, the Mother's and Father's Day celebrations, and the regular classroom parties.  The total will be $30.00 per child.

Field Trips - We will be planning four field trips this year.  One will be to the Cookie Company to see a play, one will be to Symphony Hall for a Christmas concert, one will be to ASU to visit the NASA/Mars facility and the planetarium, and there will be one more, TBA (of course, we will have to get formal approval on all of these before we proceed with our plans).  Some of the trips will have a limit to the number of parents who may accompany us.  We will do our best to make it fair to all of the parents who are interested in attending those field trips.  The cost of the field trips is not included in the activity/party donation mentioned above.

WRITE, READ, SHOW, AND TELL for Friday, September 5:  Jackie, Nick,  Jordan, Ashley, Alexa, Erin, Maddie, Isabella, Colby, McKenzie, Tori, Victoria, and Ariana.  At home, they will write three sentences about their items. In school, they will read them to the class, and then receive questions or comments. Here is an example of a Show and Tell item:

1.  This is my Olympic Gold Medal.

2.  I won it for figure skating.

3.  I am very proud of it.

SNACKS - EVERY CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE A SNACK EVERY DAY.

HOMEWORK FOR PARENTS:  If you haven't already done so, would you please write a short essay about your child?  Just jot down a few things about your child that you think I should know.  There may be things that your child is particularly sensitive to, there may be a learning style that works best for him or her, or a family situation, a health history, or some other information that might be pertinent to your child's ease and comfort in school.  Any information you share will be kept confidential. You may also tell me how special your child is, too!

Curriculum Night -It was good to see many of you on Curriculum Night.  After hearing me talk so much, you now probably understand why my newsletters are so long!

So, here's a little bit more!

At St. John Bosco, we have learning expectations that are the desired behaviors of our eighth graders as they are promoted to high school.  We begin working on these behaviors in Pre-K, and continue all the way through.  They are expectations we might even have of ourselves as adults.  One way to check on some of the SLE's is to ask your first grader the following questions:

First Grade Student Learning Expectations:  LASER

Are you:

a person who follows the way of Jesus?

a person who uses DWP skills?

a student who pays attention and does good work?

a problem solver?

a person who has a healthy mind and body?

AND...
I heard this at a meeting attended by other first grade teachers in the Diocese.  In trying to explain the difference between tattling and informing, ask your child the following question:

Are you telling me this because you want to get the person IN trouble, or because you want to get them OUT of trouble?

Take care, have a good week, and call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Yours in Christ,

Carol Perkins
