Homework Policy
Homework will usually be assigned Mondays through Thursdays. (On Fridays, I tell the children that their homework is to be safe, helpful, kind, and happy.) Homework should be returned the day after it is assigned. I understand that sometimes your schedules make it hard to oversee your child’s homework on some evenings. If that is the case, send in the completed homework as soon as possible. Remember that part of the reason for homework is to start good work habits in the children.
Homework should not be challenging in the sense that it is frustrating to children. It should reinforce what they have learned in school, and should be relatively easy to complete. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE YOUR BEGINNING READER (most first graders are at this point) STRUGGLE TO READ THE DIRECTIONS FOR AN ASSIGNMENT. For example, if your child is working on an English paper, read the directions to or with him/her, and then help them read the sentences that go with the assignment. The homework is designed to see if the child can recognize or name a certain aspect of the language.
Homework will go home in the students' homework folder daily. Because the assignment is usually a reinforcement of what we have worked on in class each day, I will not post assignments ahead of time. Homework folders should travel back and forth EVERY DAY with the First Graders. If there is no homework on a certain day, your child should have a dated "NO HOMEWORK TONIGHT" paper in his/her folder.
