DIOCESE OF PHOENIX SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS

1.  Economics 

Students will:
a.  Distinguish between needs and wants in families
b.  Learn that families work to supply their needs and wants and that some work is volunteer or service related
c.  Learn that people can save for wants and needs
d.  Become aware that families need to are for what they have including our environment
d.  Identify ways to reduce, reuse and recycle within the family

2.  Geography

a.  Know location of school
b.  Use globes and flat maps to locate: North and South Poles, Equator, continents, oceans, United States and Arizona
c.  Learn basic directions such as up, down, left and right
d.  Use a north arrow to locate cardinal directions on a map
e.  Know that symbols stand for real objects and learn to use simple map keys
f.   Use maps in class to locate places mentioned in other subject areas
g.  Identify names of continents and oceans

3.  Government and Citizenship

a.   Understand that rules provide protection and fairness
b.   Discuss class and family rules
c.   Explore fire and traffic safety
d.   Identify the president, governor, and mayor and begin to understand that people in their families vote to select leaders
e.   Understand values celebrated in national holidays such as Thanksgiving, President’s Day and Martin Luther King Holiday
f.   Recognize the flag as a symbol of our country and recite the pledge of allegiance
g.   Identify other symbols for our country, e.g., eagle, Statue of Liberty


4.  History:

a.   Understand families have a history of past members, events and customs
b.   Commemorate historical events and people through celebrations and learn about the diversity of observances in different cultures
c.   Begin to understand past, present and future through use of simple time lines and calendars
d.   Study how Pilgrim families lived Begin to identify famous people inhistory

5.   People and Culture

a.   Begin to recognize different cultural backgrounds of families
b.   Identify members of a family and their roles
c.   Understand how s/he contributes to the family
d.   Understand that the family is part of a larger community
e.   Study how families learn and become aware of things in the communit
