THEME VOCABULARY LISTS

We use the Houghton-Mifflin READING program in grade one at St. John Bosco School.  The program consists of TEN themes, and each theme consists of three weeks.   In each list, WEEK TWO is in  italics.  At the end of each theme, the following lists will be used to assess the students' knowledge of vocabulary. These can be used at home for practice.

The RED words are sight words, and must be known instantly by every student by the end of each theme.

The LEVELED words are the vocabulary words from the leveled readers that the students read in their ability-based reading groups.  If your child is reading the  first "on level" grade readers, he or she should know the "on level" vocabulary.  If your child is in the "above level" readers, he or she must know both the "on level" and "above level" lists.

The STORY vocabulary is the list of words from stories in the anthology books.  They should be familiar with these words.  It would be beneficial for them to know them instantly, also.

The CONCEPT vocabulary is from the extra stories, usually non-fiction, that are related to the main story of the week in the anthology books.  Familiarity is desired - instant recognition would be great.

Phonics Words -(Not included in these lists)  Each week the lessons focus on phonics sounds and other grammar rules.  Those will be included in the weekly spelling lists and will be assessed separately.
