In second grade, the focus is on developmental skills. Children need to be handled firmly but gently. My goal is to approach discipline in a manner that is consistent, fair, and nurturing to the development of the whole child. This includes providing the least amount of embarrassment or attention to children who are misbehaving.

RULES

Students make up their own class rules. This helps the students feel more a part of their classroom environment as well as identifying with the reasons for rules (DWP #7). Check out our rules poster in the classroom.

  School rules include the following:

  1. Respect the Lord, yourself, others and property
  2. Bullying and excluding are unacceptable, preventable and must be reported.
  3. Contribute to the Learning Environment.
  4. Follow Classroom Procedures.

TRACKING RULE BREAKING

All students are given verbal reminders minimally and in a discreet manner. If needed, the child is pulled away from the class to explain a warning. After excessive warnings, they change cards.

COLOR REASON CONSEQUENCE
Blue 0 warnings, 1-2 verbal reminders None
Green 1 warning None- Green is good!
Yellow 2 warnings 5 minutes lost from recess
Red 3 warnings, (automatic red card= bullying or physical violations) no recess, note sent home

RECESS

Lunch recess is necessary and mandated by the Diocesan Health and Wellness policy and will never be taken away. However, any students making choices that do not assist in earning or participating in extra recess will spend time in the classroom or on the wall outside.

MANAGEMENT/REWARDS/INCENTIVES

My main management routine includes JUST FOR JESUS, which are beads that track excellent choices to treat others as Jesus would. They are not "worth" anything in terms of a reward. We focus very heavily on positive reinforcement with simultaneous intrinsic motivation; things done because they are right, and for no other reason.

Students who make great behavior choices may enjoy some of the following classroom rewards and incentives.

  • Raffle tickets
  • Extra Recess
  • Lunch with the Teacher
  • Chance Cards
  • Listening! Chart (earned game time)
  • Espo's Dough and Math Store
