About the Website
The St. John Bosco Interparish School Website runs on proven, enterprise level open source software. This includes the FreeBSD operating system, Apache web server and Typo3 content management system.
The website was designed with the following objectives:
- Web standards compliant
- Low learning curve for content contributors
- Highly accessible for visitors
Web Standards Compliant
The website is XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS 2.1 compliant. This ensures compatibility with modern web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera Software's Opera, Apple's Safari and KDE's Konqueror browsers.
Low Learning Curve for Content Contributors
With currently over 50 individuals adding content to the website, a minimal learning curve was essential. The use of the Typo3 content management system provides these content contributors the ability to easily add content, images, forms, tables and other content elements to the website in a consistent, standard manner. Individuals knowing how to utilize a word processor and navigate web pages can quickly and easily create content on the website.
Highly Accessible for Visitors
With over 300 pages and growing daily, allowing visitors to find content on the website is crucial. The website features a variety of navigational tools:
- Full Indexed Search - At the top of every page on the site is a search field that accesses the full site search index.
- Keywords - Certain content, such as the handbook can quickly be accessed by typing in "handbook" in the search field.
- Site Map - The site hierarchy with links to all pages on the site.
- Site Layout - The site is divided into six major sections: About Us, Admissions, Academics, For Parents, Student Interest and Development. In addition, drop down menus provide easy access to over 40 sub-sections within these areas of the site.
- Breadcrumbs (Rootline Navigation) - At the top of each page (below the menu), a bread crumb navigation element is available to show how the page relates to other pages and the home page of the site.
- Quick Links - The homepage features "Quick Links": A list of popular, frequently requested content on the site. While this content is accessible via the menu system, site map and search, this provides a quick way to access frequently requested content, quickly.
